Sometimes, texting your thoughts and emotions can get tiresome or impersonal. To avoid this, you can use the built-in Audio option in the Messages app to send voice messages from your iPhone. Here’s everything you need to know.

How to send a voice message on iPhone in iOS 17

There are a few things you need to take into account before sending voice messages on iPhone.

First, you need to ensure iMessage is active for both the sender and receiver. Otherwise, the audio recording will be sent as an MMS.

Next, if you are using iOS 16, the Audio option (blue waveform icon) is available right under the text field in the Messages app. You can just tap on it and record your voice message.

Now, if you are using iOS 17, you need to tap the + button next to the text field to select the Audio option and send voice messages. Here’s a step-by-step guide:

How to record and send an audio message on iPhone

  1. Open the Messages app → Head to an iMessage conversation or start a new one.
  2. Tap the + button to the left of the text field.
  3. Select Audio from the pop-up to begin recording your voice message.

Tap the plus icon select audio start recording audio on your iphone
  4. Tap the red Stop button to pause or end the recording. Then, tap the Play button to review it.
    • You can also tap the “+ (with the message duration)” button to continue the recording.
  5. If you are satisfied with the recorded message, tap the Send button (blue arrow). If not, tap the X button to discard it.

Tap pause button then tap play to review either tap send or cancel button

If you send a voice note accidentally, don’t worry. You can unsend it, just like how you can unsend text messages on your iPhone. Just press and hold the voice message and select Undo Send from the pop-up.

Alternatively, you can ask Siri on your iPhone to send a voice message to a particular contact.

Further, by default, every voice message you send or receive expires within 2 minutes of sending or listening to it.

So, if you want to keep the voice message in the iMessage conversation, you need to tap Keep under the voice message or head to Messages settings and change the expiration settings.

How to listen and reply to voice messages on iPhone

There are a couple of ways you can listen or reply to voice messages. Additionally, you can save the voice messages you receive to the Voice Memos app. I’ll walk you through each process one by one.

Listen to voice messages

  • Tap the Play button on the voice message you received.
  • Alternatively, you can raise the iPhone to your ear, and the message will start playing automatically.
Tap play icon to play the audio message or raise iphone to listen

If Raise to Listen isn’t working for you, make sure the feature is enabled in SettingsMessages.

Note
  • With iOS 17, you get a transcript of all the voice messages you receive.

Reply to a voice message

You can obviously respond to a voice message with text as usual. But if you wish to respond with an audio message of your own, here’s how you can do it:

  1. Press and hold the voice message you received → Pick Reply from the pop-up.
  2. Tap and hold the red wave icon in the text field to record your reply.
You can directly come to this step if you don’t wish to point out which particular message you’re replying to.
  3. Once you’re done speaking, tap the red Pause button to stop recording.
  4. Finally, to send the recording, tap the Send button at the right of the text field.

Tap reply record your audio message tap the blue icon to send your audio message

Alternatively, if you want to respond without tapping your iPhone display, you can lower your iPhone and raise it back to your ear → Once you hear a tone, you can start recording your response. Please note that this method works only for the last audio message you received in an iMessage thread.

Save voice messages

You can easily save a sent or received audio message to the Voice Memos app.

  1. To save a voice message to the Voice Memos app, you must first select the Keep option underneath it.
  2. After that, long press the audio message → Select Save to Voice Memos from the pop-up that appears.
Save the sent or received audio message on iphone

To find the recording in the Voice Memos app, go to All Recordings → Look for a clip titled Audio Message from <contact name>.

I’d highly recommend renaming the title of the audio clip to something you can recall later because there’s no way you can search for an audio message in the Messages app.

To rename, tap the audio file → Select the three-dot menuEdit Recording → Tap the title and edit it.

Limitations of sending voice messages on iPhone

While voice messages allow you to express yourself more accurately, they certainly come with a few drawbacks:

  • Privacy concerns: If you are in a public place or a meeting, sending an audio message can get awkward – especially if you are passing on confidential or private information.
  • Accessibility: People with hearing impairment may find it hard to access voice messages. Also, sometimes, listening to an audio message isn’t feasible if the user is in a noisy environment.
  • Search issues: Unlike text messages, searching for a particular voice message in a thread using Search is impossible.
  • Transcription issues: You may not always get an accurate transcription, due to different accents, background noise, and so on.
  • Stable internet connection: While you can send a text message even when your iPhone’s internet speed is slower, voice messages require a stable internet connection.
  • Compatible issues with non-iOS devices: While you can anytime use a third-party messaging app to send audio messages to a non-iOS device, the same is not possible with iMessage.
Can you send audio messages from an iPhone to Android?

Yes, you can send audio messages from an iPhone to Android via the Voice Memos app. To do so, open the Voice Memos app > record and save a Voice Memo > tap the three-dot icon on the recorded message > tap Share and select the Messages app > Add contact and tap Send.

How do I stop my voice messages from expiring?

Go to Settings on your iPhone > Messages and tap on Expire under the Audio Messages section. Next, select Never in the subsequent menu.

Conclusion

There you go; this is how you send voice messages on iPhone. By now, you must agree on how convenient recording and sending a voice message can be, when compared to typing those long texts. However, just to be sure of what you’re doing, always review a recorded message before sending.

If you have any doubts or questions regarding voice messages, feel free to comment below. I’d be happy to respond.

Just like the messages chat effects, the Tapback feature in messages on Mac allows you to add another layer of flair and expressiveness to your iMessage conversations. While using the Tapback feature in iMessage on iPhone is pretty straightforward, doing the same on a Mac may seem complex if you are new to messaging on Mac.

So, whether you want to acknowledge a message with a thumbs up or share a laugh with a ha-ha reaction, this guide has you covered. Dive in and make messaging on Mac more fun!

What is Tapback on iMessage?

Introduced with iOS 10, the Tapback feature in iMessage allows you to quickly respond to a message with different visual reactions. These visual reactions include a heart, thumbs up, thumbs down, double exclamation mark, “Ha ha,” and question mark.

Tapbacks can be extremely helpful if you wish to respond quickly with emojis instead of text.

How to add Tapback to iMessage on Mac

To Tapback a message on a Mac, you first need to set up iMessage on your Mac, as the Tapback feature is limited to iMessage conversations.

Also, ensure your Mac is running at least macOS 10.2 or later. Once done, reacting to a message with a Tapback is a breeze.

  1. Open the Messages app → Head to an iMessage conversation.
  2. Here, control-click the desired message
  3. Now, choose the desired Tapback emoji corresponding to your reaction in the pop-up that appears.

Tap and hold the desired message and select a desired tapback icon from the pop-up that appears
  4. Once done, the Tapback reaction will appear above the original message.

Right click on the message and select Tapback...

How to delete a Tapback from an iMessage

There may come an instance where you accidentally choose the wrong Tapback reaction or change your mind and want to remove the reaction altogether. In that case, you can easily remove a Tapback from an iMessage.

  1. Click the Tapback reaction above the message.

Tap on Tapback reaction above the message
  2. Now, click the highlighted Tapback icon to deselect it.
Tap on selected Tapback icon to remove the Tapback reaction

Happy messaging!

That’s it; this is all about using Tapback in messages on Mac. As a regular iMessage user, I often use the Tapback reaction to fast-track my conversations, and you should, too.

However, if you still have doubts, comment down, and I’ll be happy to respond.

Using stickers in iMessage provides a great way to add an expressive twist to your conversations. Whether you’re sending heartfelt wishes, sharing inside jokes, or expressing disbelief, there’s a sticker pack out there to convey it all. The good thing is, if you find an amazing pack, you can easily gift that iMessage sticker pack to your friends or family.

In this guide, I’ll walk you through the simple process of sending an iMessage sticker pack as a gift on iPhone and iPad. Additionally, I’ll offer some pro tips to help you find the best iMessage sticker packs worth gifting.

How to send iMessage sticker pack as a gift

Sticker packs in Messages are basically iMessage apps that you can download and use as usual. Therefore, the steps to gifting an iMessage sticker pack are similar to gifting a paid app. Here’s how you do it:

Note: You can send iMessage sticker packs as gifts only to recipients in the same region as you.

  1. Locate and open the Messages app on your iPhone or iPad.
  2. Open any conversation → Tap the plus icon next to the text field.
  3. Tap StickersSwipe right to the left on the top bar to view the available sticker packs.

Tap on plus in any iMessage conversation, select Stickers and swipe from right to left
  4. Now, select Edit at the end of the bar → Pick Get Sticker Apps on the App Store.
  5. Find and open a paid iMessage sticker pack you wish to send as a gift.

Tap on Edit, select Get Sticker Apps on the App Store and select any paid stickers pack you want to gift
  6. Tap the Share icon located on the right-hand side → Then, select Gift App.
  7. Now, enter the email of the person to whom you wish to send the sticker pack.
  8. Optionally, you can add a personalized message → Select a date to send the gift.
  9. Select Next.

Tap on the share icon, select Gift App, enter the email ID, add custom message, select date and tap Next
  10. Now, scroll horizontally to select a theme for the sticker pack cover → Then, tap Next.
  11. Finally, review the payment details for the gift → Then, tap BuyBUY NOW.

Select the Theme, tap Next, choose Buy and hit Buy now

The recipient will get an email notification and can quickly download the sticker pack to add it to their sticker collection in the Messages app.

For a smoother transaction, make sure you have added sufficient funds to your Apple ID beforehand.

If you don’t want to share paid sticker packs, you can follow steps 1-4 → Pick a free sticker packShare it with your contact. As easy as that!

Tips to find best iMessage sticker packs

Discovering the perfect iMessage sticker pack to gift can be challenging. To ease this process, consider the recipient’s interests and explore popular and highly rated packs on the iMessage App Store. Alternatively, you can use unique features such as Live Stickers to ensure a delightful and personalized messaging experience.

Wrapping up…

Gifting iMessage sticker packs can be a great way to add a creative flair to plain old iMessage. I have personally enjoyed using this fun feature, and I’d highly recommend you give it a shot, too.

Apart from making phone calls, perhaps two of the most popular things to do on our iPhones are texting on iMessages and playing games.

Well, what if you combine both of them and play while you chat? Yes, it’s possible to play iMessage games on your iPhone while you’re texting with your contacts. We think it’s pretty cool and, of course, fun! So let’s begin.

You’ll need internet access, and your friend needs to install the game on their iPhone as well.

How to play iMessage games with friends on iPhone

The other person must have iMessage enabled. You and your friend must download the same iMessage game to play.

  1. Launch iMessage → Open an ongoing conversation or start a new one in iMessage.
  2. Tap the plus icon (+) → Select More Store.

Tap the (+) icon, More, App Store in iMessage
  3. Scroll down to the Great iMessage Games section → Tap Get beside the game you like.
    Here, I have downloaded GamePigeon.
  4. Once the add-on is downloaded successfully, select Open.
Access the app by tapping the plus icon (+) in chat → More → GamePegion.
  5. Now select any listed game that fits your mood best.
I have opted for the Chess game.

Download GamePegion, select game in iMessage
  6. In this instance, the respective game will be added in chat.
  7. Add a message if you desire → Hit Send.
  8. Now tap the play button hovering over the game to begin.
  9. Wait for your opponent to join the battle.

Hit Send, start the game, wait for your opponent in iMessage
  10. Follow the in-game rules → Hit Send after making a move.
  11. The recipient will receive a link to download it on their phone as a message. Once they install the game, you can start playing.
  12. You will get a notification when the recipient makes a move → Tap the game to make your next move.
  13. If you wish, you can start another game by choosing Play Again.
  14. Otherwise, close the interface. You will see your results in the chat.

Tap Play Again, assess the match in iMessage

That’s all! This way, you can play iMessage Games with friends on your iPhone. They don’t have to be one-on-one games, either. You can also play multiplayer options like 20 Questions or Gomoku in a group chat. It helps you save valuable storage space on your iPhone, so you don’t need to download separate gaming apps

That’s all, mate!

This is how you can install and play games in iMessage. If you’re hoping to spice up your conversation even further you can use bubble and screen effects or change the iMessage bubble color on iPhone and iPad.

Any questions? Ask away in the comments below. We’ll do our best to help you!

Did you know that iMessage allows you to make your texts even more creative and fun? You can add special effects to your messages, such as balloons, confetti, fireworks, etc. These effects let you personalize your message and make it stand out. Here, I will show you how to send iMessage with effects on iPhone. So, stay tuned!

How to use effects with iMessage on your iPhone

  1. Open Messages → Start a new chat or reply to an existing one.
  2. Type your message → Long-press the blue send icon.
  3. Choose a special message effect → Tap the send button.

long press the send button, select a message effect and tap send in imessage

Sending iMessage with effects is a fun way to add personality to your messages. Not only texts, but you can also use effects on Memoji stickers, images, videos, GIFs, etc. Even personal messages may be sent using invisible ink, which the receiver must tap to disclose

How to use bubble and screen effects in iMessage

You can animate the chat box wallpaper using screen effects or alter the appearance of your message using bubble effects. There are several bubble and screen effects options, including:

  • Slam: The text bubble will bang upon the chat box.
  • Loud: The message will rise from the screen and tremble, hinting that it is being shouted.
  • Gentle: The message’s words will begin tiny as if whispered, and gradually expand to full size.
  • Invisible Ink: It will conceal your text under a blurring layer until the receiver swipes to expose it.

tap bubble to get bubble effects and tap screen to get full screen message effect in imessage

The above was the bubble effect. Besides, iMessage offers screen effects, which take over the whole display and show the animation behind your message. While adding effects to your iMessage, shift to Screen and swipe left to get the full-screen effects.

  • Echo: The copies of your message spread over the screen.
  • Spotlight: Everything except a single area of the display turns black, illuminating your message.
  • Balloons: An animation of colorful balloons appears.
  • Confetti: Paper fragments of various colors fall from the top of the screen.
  • Love: The text expands into the form of a huge heart and floats away.
  • Lasers: The screen becomes black, and colorful lasers go up and down the display.
  • Fireworks: Your message is accompanied by a firework show with haptic feedback.
  • Celebration: Golden sparks rain down from the upper-right corner of the screen.

How to send iMessage with Camera effects

  1. Start a new message or reply to an old chat in Messages.
  2. Tap the plus icon → Select Camera.

  4. Click photo or record a video → Tap Done.

tap plus sign, select camera, tap effects icon, select a effect, click photo, tap done in imessage
  5. Enter your message → Tap the send button

How to use built-in iMessage effects for specific words

When you send a message with specific words, iMessage adds screen effects automatically. You don’t need to go through the abovementioned steps to activate them. And don’t worry! These trigger words also work in other languages.

  • Congratulations: Shower of colorful confetti
  • Happy birthday: Balloons floating up on the screen
  • Happy Chinese New Year: Celebration with gold, glittery confetti
  • Happy New Year: Fireworks
  • Pew pew: Cool lasers

Add a handwritten message or doodle

You may add a handwritten note to your messages to personalize them. The message will animate to the recipient. So, it’s a great way to add a special touch to your text.

How to view iMessage effects and respond to them with expressions

You will immediately see the animation when you receive an iMessage with effects on iPhone. You may playback it later by tapping the Replay [name of effect] button underneath the message. Also, the Invisible Ink effect is reset automatically after being revealed.

Moreover, you may respond to messages with emotions using Tapback.

iMessage effects not working? Fix it!

A few settings will influence how message effects look and play. It may happen you have disabled iMessage screen effects on your iPhone. So you need to modify those if you can’t see special texting effects on your iPhone.

  1. Go to Settings → Select Accessibility.
  2. Tap Motion → Toggle off Reduce Motion.

tap accessibility, motion, toggle off reduce motion in settings

It will allow full-screen animations to play appropriately.

When can you add special effects to messages on iPhone?

You can use message effects only with iMessage. All other SMS text messages sent via the iPhone’s Messages app are not eligible. iMessage is enabled when you send messages to other iPhone users, and the text appears as blue bubbles. Therefore, the message effects won’t be visible to Android users.

Add fun to your boring texts!

Whether you’re using a bubble effect, a screen effect, or even a handwritten message, these features can make your conversations more creative, expressive, and engaging. But too many effects can become overwhelming and detract from the actual content of your messages. Which effect do you like the best? Let me know in the comments below!

As mentioned earlier, the Microsoft Phone Link app is in its beta phase and is only available to select users who are a part of the Windows 11 Insider Program.

Follow the steps mentioned below to join the Windows Insider Program:

  1. Head into Settings on your Windows computer.
  2. Select the Windows Update option at the bottom left of your screen.
  3. Click Windows Insider Program located under the More Options menu.
  4. Click the Get Started button.
  5. Now, follow the onscreen instructions, and choose from any one of the three insider channels available on your device.

In order to use iMessage on your Windows computer, the Microsoft Phone Link app should be running on version 1.23012.169.0 or higher.

Note: This feature is only available to users running a licensed version of Windows 11 on their computer. Moreover, Microsoft has promised to increase the feature’s availability to more users over time based on the feedback they receive.

  1. Install the Microsoft Phone Link app on your Windows PC.
  2. Install the Link to Windows app from the App Store on your iPhone.
  3. Open the Microsoft Phone Link app on your Windows computer.
  4. Click the iPhone option under Pick your phone.
If you can’t see the iPhone option or if it is grayed out, you are not a part of the Beta testing yet.

    access iMessages on windows
  5. Sign in with your Microsoft account on your Windows 11 computer and iPhone.
  6. Open the Link to Windows app on your iPhone and scan the QR code shown on your Windows 11 computer.
  7. Grant the Link to Windows app access to Bluetooth when prompted.
Allow other permissions so the Link to Windows app can access your iPhone.

That’s it! Now, your iPhone is successfully linked to your Windows 11 computer.

Please note that these steps would also work for the stable rollout of the Microsoft Phone Link with support for iPhone.

Pairing an iPhone with a Windows computer will make things easier for several people. Some of us prefer using an iPhone as our daily driver and have to use a Windows computer for work. Personally, I use an iPhone as the primary daily driver and a Windows computer for work and gaming for the simple reason that gaming on Mac is not yet at par with Windows.

When you’re in such a situation, you have to compromise on the connectivity because, trust me, nothing is as convenient as using an iPhone alongside a Mac. However, the Windows Phone Link app saves the day and makes things easier for users like us. It might not be the best, but it gets the job done.

Current limitations of Phone Link app

  • To begin with, you cannot send images or any other form of media in iMessage through the Phone Link app.
  • Additionally, the Phone Link app cannot access iMessage chat history and will only display real-time conversations.
  • You can only respond to the messages you receive when your iPhone is paired with your Windows computer through Bluetooth.

A step in the right direction!

Although not perfect, this initiative by Microsoft is sure to impress a lot of tech geeks out there. How excited are you to use iMessage on Windows? Do let me know in the comments.

iMessage screen effects on iPhone/iPad are fun to use and can add a flair in the ‘usual communications’ with the range of screen and bubble effects. However, I keep it off to prevent unnecessary bombarding of effects. I’m just a little sensitive to motions, and these bubbly effects sometimes distract me when I am working on important things. If you too fall under the same category, here’s how you can disable iMessage screen effects.

How to disable iMessage effects from auto-playing on iPhone or iPad

  1. Open the Settings app on your iPhone
  2. Go to the Accessibility section.
  3. Now select Motion and toggle off ‘Auto Play iMessage Effects.’Turn Off Auto Play iMessage Effects to Disable iMessage Screen Effects

NOTE: The steps mentioned above are only for devices operating on iOS 13 or later. If you are using a preceding version of iOS, you’ll have to open the Settings app → Accessibility → Reduce Motion → Disable iMessage Screen Effects.

Can I permanently disable iMessage screen effects?

I’m afraid you can’t do that. However, the steps mentioned above will stop the unwanted display of effects and give the bait in your hand. Having said this, you can choose to manually play these effects by the ‘Replay‘ option beneath the text bubble.

Are you opting to disable iMessage screen effects on your device?

With new iMessage upgrades and features like Memojis, personalizing profile, emoji tapback, etc., Apple has undoubtedly made the default chat app engaging. However, there are days when you like things simple. I hope the steps help you. Just in case there’s anything else I can help you with, do let me know.
