While writing how-to guides for you guys, I can’t even count how often I hit the Delete key. So, I can understand your plight if the Delete key is not working on your Mac. However, fixing your Delete key is easier than you think.

Here, I will show you different methods to troubleshoot the issue. But, before I start, let’s understand why you are facing the problem in the first place.

Why is Delete key not working on my Mac?

The Delete button may stop working on your Mac due to various reasons, such as:

  • Software glitches
  • Physical damage
  • Misconfigured keyboard settings
  • Dirt and debris on the Keyboard
  • Wired or Bluetooth Keyboard issues

How to fix delete button not working on Mac

Now that you have a better insight, let’s learn how to deal with this jarring issue effectively.

  1. Clean your Mac keyboard
  2. Restart your Mac
  3. Enable Keyboard Viewer
  4. Check connection for wired keyboard
  5. Un-pair and pair the Bluetooth keyboard again
  6. Use the correct key combination
  7. Verify delete permissions
  8. Check the Keyboard settings
  9. Turn off Slow Keys
  10. Delete Keyboard PLIST file
  11. Reset PRAM or NVRAM on your Macbook
  12. Update macOS
  13. Reset your Mac

1. Clean your Mac keyboard

Depending on your working conditions, dust and debris can accumulate over and underneath the keyboard’s keys. So, it can cause a hindrance when you press the Delete key.

So, before trying any drastic fixes, thoroughly clean your Mac’s keyboard with a microfiber cloth or soft-bristled cleaning brush. Ensure no dust is left under the keys.

Now, check whether the Delete key is working fine. If not, move on to other solutions.

2. Restart your Mac

A simple restart can fix any underlying minor software glitches or bugs, causing the Delete key to malfunction.

  1. Click the Apple logo at the top left of the desktop.
  2. Select Restart from the drop-down menu.

Select the Apple Logo and tap Restart on Mac

3. Enable Keyboard Viewer

Now that cleaning and restarting Mac is out of the way, it’s time to handle this problem professionally. When the delete key on your Mac starts to give you a hard time, Keyboard Viewer can serve as an effective solution. This feature allows you to see a virtual representation of your keyboard on the screen, highlighting pressed keys as you type.

Follow the steps discussed below to enable Keyboard Viewer for your Mac:

  1. Click the Apple logo ()System Settings.

Click Apple Logo and System Settings in macOS Ventura
  2. Choose the Keyboard option from the menu.
  3. Hit Edit next to the Input Sources tab.

    Go to Keyboard, Edit
  4. Finally, toggle on the Show Input menu in menu bar.
  5. Select Done to exit the interface.

Toggle on the Show Input menu in menu bar
  6. Now, click the Keyboard icon from the menu bar.
  7. Choose Show Keyboard Viewer.

    Select Show Keyboard Viewer
  8. Doing so, a virtual keyboard will appear on your screen.

If your Mac’s Delete key is working fine, it will be highlighted in the virtual keyboard. If not, check the same using any external Keyboard. Even if that fails, get your Mac checked at Apple Genius Bar.

4. Check connection for wired keyboard

If you are using a wired keyboard with your Mac, the problem may lie in the wired connection instead of the Delete key. In that case, check the wire for any wear and tear. If not, do this:

  1. Unplug the Keyboard from your Mac.
  2. Clean the USB port to remove any dust or debris.
  3. Connect the keyboard to your Mac, and check whether the Delete key works.
  4. If not, try plugging the keyboard into another USB port, as the issue can also be with your Mac’s USB port.

5. Un-pair and pair the Bluetooth keyboard again

A connectivity issue between your Mac and the Bluetooth keyboard can be the main culprit behind the Delete key not working. Try disconnecting the Bluetooth keyboard and pairing it again to see if this solves the problem.

  1. Open the Bluetooth settings on your Mac.
  2. Click Disconnect next to the paired keyboard.

    Disconnect the Keyboard
  3. Now, click the “i” (info) button next to the Connect button.

Click the info icon next to the paired keyboard
  4. Choose Forget This DeviceForget Device when prompted.

Click Forget This Device in Keyboard
  5. Wait for a few seconds and put your keyboard in the pairing mode.
  6. Locate the Keyboard under Nearby Devices list → Click Connect next to it.

    Connect the Keyboard

Once the process is complete, try using the Delete key again.

6. Use the correct key combination

If the Delete key can remove a typed word but can’t delete a file or item, you might be using the wrong key combination.

If you simply hit the Delete key after selecting an item, it won’t do anything. This is because deleting an item requires pressing the “Command + Delete” or “Shift + Command + Delete” key combination.

7. Verify delete permissions

If, even after using the correct key combination, you can’t delete the selected file or folder, you might not have the necessary permissions to do so. Here’s how to verify:

  1. Right-click on the file or folder you want to delete.
  2. Click on the Get Info.
  3. Check whether you have the Read and Write permissions.

8. Check the Keyboard settings

Sometimes, the problem might not be particularly with the Delete key but with the Keyboard settings itself. To check this:

  1. Open the Keyboard settings on your Mac.
  2. Here, ensure the Key repeat rate and Delay until repeat is set to your preference.

Select Keyboard in Settings, adjust Key repeat rate and Delay until repeat on Mac

9. Turn off Slow Keys

Like the above Keyboard settings, there is a chance that you might have activated the Slow Keys accessibility. This feature delays the time between pressing the physical key and your Mac registering the input.

  1. Navigate to Apple logo ()System Settings.

Click Apple Logo and System Settings in macOS Ventura
  2. Head over to the Accessibility menu.
  3. Choose the Keyboard option.

    Accessibility, Keyboard
  4. Disable Slow Keys if enabled.

    Disable Slow Keys

Keep in mind that this solution may be applicable if you are using an older MacBook model or have enabled this particular accessibility feature intentionally.

10. Delete Keyboard PLIST file

If the issue persists, deleting the Keyboard Property List (PLIST) file may help. These files store your Mac’s keyboard settings, including keyboard preferences.

  1. Open Finder → Click Go in the menu bar.
  2. Select the Go to folder option.

    Click Go, Go To folder
  3. Type in ~/Library/Preferences and hit return.

    Go to ~:Library:Preferences
  4. Now locate the following files:
    • apple.Keyboard-Settings.extension.plist
    • com.apple.keyboardservicesd.plist
  5. Select both and Move to Bin.

    Delete keyboard plist files
  6. Close Finder and restart your Mac.

11. Reset PRAM or NVRAM on your Macbook

Resetting your Mac’s PRAM (Parameter Random Access Memory) can often fix the hardware issue your Mac is experiencing. To do this:

  1. Shut down your Mac.
  2. Now, turn it back on and immediately press & hold the “Command + P + R” keys until you hear the startup sound for the next time.

12. Update macOS

Apple regularly pushes new macOS updates to resolve various issues. So, check if an update is available. If yes, update macOS on your Mac.

Simply, go to System SettingsGeneralSoftware Update → Click Upgrade now.

go to general, software update in mac settings

13. Reset your Mac

If nothing works, factory resetting your Mac is your last resort. It can help resolve various hardware and software issues your Mac might be experiencing and will return it in out-of-the-box condition.

Bonus: Delete text without using Delete key on your Mac

If the factory reset method doesn’t work, you can use several key combinations to delete the typed text.

Here’s a set of commands you can use for your convenience.

  • To delete the character before the cursor, press Ctrl+H.
  • To delete the character before the cursor, press Ctrl+D.
  • To delete text, highlight it and right-click the same → Select Cut.
  • To delete from the cursor to the end of the line or paragraph, Press Ctrl+K.

These should come in handy until you find a permanent resolve.

Restore and recover!

I hope you have successfully fixed the Delete key not working on Mac issue with the troubleshooting steps I have listed and can delete text, files, and more. However, if the issue persists after trying everything, contact Apple Support.

Also, if you know another solution, do comment below.

The grey bar at the bottom of the iPhone is a visual indicator of where you can swipe up to return to the home screen. But if you have used an iPhone for a long time, you might find it annoying. Sadly, there is no way to remove the grey Home Bar at the bottom of the iPhone, as it is a fundamental part of its UI.

Thankfully, I have found a workaround to temporarily hide the grey home bar on iPhones. And before I show you the steps to do that, let me explain what purpose the grey bar actually serves.

Why do I have a grey bar at the bottom of my iPhone?

The grey bar found at the bottom of newer iPhones works as a substitute for the home button found on older iPhones. Let me explain further.

Older iPhones had a physical home button that was used to return to the home screen and unlock your iPhone. But, with the latest iPhones, you get a virtual home bar that functions similarly. You can also swipe right or left on it to switch between the active apps.

Despite its usefulness, you may want to remove the grey home bar at the bottom of your iPhone to avoid distraction. Sadly, there is no native way to turn it off. However, the Guided Access accessibility feature can help you temporarily hide it from your screen.

Let’s learn how to perform this quick workaround and enjoy an actual full-screen experience!

How to remove the grey bar from iPhone

The Guided Access is an accessibility feature that limits access to your iPhone functionalities and locks you in one app. When you activate it, the grey Home Bar is removed from the screen to stop you from exiting the app.

So, whenever you want to immerse yourself in an app, turn on this mode. Follow the steps below to set up Guided Access on your iPhone:

  1. Open the Settings app → Select Accessibility.
  2. Here, scroll down and tap Guided Access.
  3. Toggle on Guided Access → Tap Continue.

Go to Accessibility, select Guided Access, toggle on Guided Access
  4. Now, select Passcode Settings.
  5. Tap Set Guided Access Passcode → Enter a passcode that you will use to end the Guided Access session.
Alternatively, toggle on Face ID to end a Guided Access session with it.

Select Passcode Settings, Tap Set Guided Access Passcode

Now that you have configured the Guided Access settings let’s hide the grey Home Bar from your iPhone screen.

  1. Open the app where you wish to remove the grey bar.
  2. Press the Side button thrice to activate Guided Access.
  3. Tap the Start button to start the Guided Access session.

You will see that the app is in full-screen mode now, and there isn’t a grey home bar at the bottom center.

To exit Guided Access, triple-press the Side button and enter the passcode you set previously. Next, tap the End button to confirm.

Alternatively, you can double-press the Side button and use your Face ID to deactivate Guided Access on your iPhone.

Note

Earlier, you could use Siri to turn on Guided Access. However, this functionality no longer works.

Have you enjoyed the hack? Guided Access offers many more features. Check out our detailed guide on how to use Guided Access on your iPhone.

Does hiding the Home Bar affect the functionality of my iPhone?

Yes, it does. When you activate Guided Access to hide the Home Bar, you won’t be able to access other features or apps. You must deactivate this mode to use your iPhone again.

All glory to your display!

I hope now you can quickly remove the grey home bar on your iPhone. You may get advice to Jailbreak your iPhone to permanently remove the grey bar. But I would advise against it, as doing so can void your iPhone’s warranty.

If you face any issues, let me know in the comment section below!

While going to theaters and watching cable TV is still a thing, a growing number of viewers prefer consuming global content through streaming devices. Apple TV is at the forefront of this change. However, these devices come with their own security and geo-restriction challenges. To avoid these troubles, you can set up and use a VPN on your Apple TV.

Before I show you how it is done, here’s a look at why you should consider using a VPN on Apple TV.

Why should you use VPN on Apple TV?

There are multiple benefits of installing a VPN on Apple TV:

  • Enhanced privacy and security: A VPN encrypts your internet connection, making it more secure and protecting your online activities from prying eyes, including advertisers and potential hackers.
  • Access to geo-restricted content: Content streaming services, such as Netflix, Hulu, and Prime Video, offer different content libraries in regions other than yours. By using a VPN service on your Apple TV, you can change your virtual location and access the restricted content in your region.
  • Bypass ISP throttling: Many internet service providers throttle their internet speed for certain activities like streaming. You can bypass this throttling using an effective VPN service and enjoy smoother streaming experiences.

Before starting the setup process, it’s important to subscribe to a VPN service you’d like to use for your Apple TV or Apple TV 4K.

You can choose from two types of VPNs. One that has a dedicated app for tvOS, such as ExpressVPN. Or the other that offers budget-friendly plans and requires manual configuration through router settings, such as SurfShark VPN

To learn more, you can check out our detailed guide on the best VPNs for Apple TV and pick a service that best meets your needs.

How to use a VPN on Apple TV – 4 ways

You can set up and use a VPN on your Apple TV in four ways, each of which I have explained below in detail. But I’ll begin with the easiest method.

1. Install VPN app on tvOS 17 or later

With many popular VPN companies like ExpressVPN, NordVPN, and IPVanish now offering Apple TV dedicated VPN apps, using VPN on Apple TV has become easier than ever.

However, you must make sure that your Apple TV or Apple TV 4K streaming device is running tvOS 17 or later.

After that, all you need to do is download the VPN app on your Apple TV, launch it, and connect to your preferred server. Here’s how:

  1. Launch the App Store on your Apple TV.
  2. Search for your preferred VPN app and Download it.
  3. Once the VPN app gets installed, launch it and sign in to your account.
  4. Now, connect to your preferred VPN server and stream your favorite shows.

2. Set up a VPN on your router

If you own a VPN-compatible router, I recommend you set up a VPN on your router to enhance the security of your Apple TV and access content across the globe.

The advantage of setting up VPN on your router is that it not only protects your Apple TV but all the devices connected to it.

Set up VPN on your router

To use VPN on your router, you need to first obtain OpenVPN credentials from your subscribed VPN service and manually add it or your router’s configuration panel.

The process can get a bit tedious. But the steps below will help you along the way.

  1. Obtain the OpenVPN credentials for your router from your VPN provider’s website
  2. On the VPN provider’s website, go to locations and click on the download icon next to your desired server to the right of the server’s name.
  3. Click on Download UDP to download the selected server’s configuration file.
  4. Now, open your router’s Configuration Panel by entering its IP address in your browser, just like you would be using a website’s URL.
  5. Under the Advanced Settings section, select the VPN Client tab.
(Note: The VPN Client tab location may vary depending on your router’s model and brand.)
  6. Here, click on Add Profile
  7. Select the OpenVPN tab and enter the credentials you generated in the 1st step.
  8. Now, upload the configuration file of the server you downloaded earlier.
  9. Once done, click the Activate button to connect your router to the VPN server.

3. Set up a virtual router with VPN

If your router is not VPN-compatible or offers no firmware, you can create a virtual router using your Mac and connect your Apple TV to it.

And don’t worry; using a virtual router won’t reduce the benefits you get with a VPN router. You’ll still get full VPN encryption and access to the entire server list offered by your VPN provider.

Here’s how you can set up the virtual router with a VPN on your Mac:

  1. Download the VPN app on your Mac App Store.
    For demonstration, I’m using SurfShark.
  2. Now, connect your Mac to the router using an ethernet cable.
  3. Launch Surfshark and log in to your account.
  4. Go to the Surfshark SettingsProtocol → OpenVPN (UDP)
  5. Head back to the home page and connect to your preferred VPN server
  6. Now, open the Settings app on your Mac → Search and enter the Sharing tab.
  7. Toggle on Internet Sharing under the Accessories & Internet section.
  8. Here, click the Up Down Arrow button next to Share your connection and choose Surfshark OpenVPN (UDP) in the drop-down menu.
  9. Once done, toggle on Wi-Fi under the To devices using section.
  10. Enter the details in the Configure an internet sharing network window and click OK
  11. Toggle on Internet sharing at the top and click the Turn on button in the confirmation prompt.
  12. Now, connect your Apple TV to the Wi-Fi network you created in the 10th step.
  13. Restart your Apple TV and enjoy streaming geo-restricted content from the location you selected in the 5th step.

4. Set up Smart DNS on your Apple TV

Now, if your objective is to just access geo-restricted content, you can manually set up Smart DNS on your Apple TV. This will route your entire internet connection through a remote server and allow you to bypass regional restrictions.

  1. Go to the Surfshark Smart DNS page using your preferred browser.
  2. Select TV or Console and click on the Activate Smart DNS button.

Select TV or Console and click on Activate Smart DNS button
  3. Wait a few moments for your Smart DNS address to generate.
  4. Once you receive the Smart DNS address on your Apple TV, go to SettingsNetwork → → Change the Apple TV DNS

Note

Please note that the Smart DNS option is not as safe as using a VPN service. Smart DNS doesn’t encrypt your traffic and mask your IP address, thereby not offering the privacy and security that a regular VPN service does.

How to disconnect VPN on Apple TV

If you want to use a VPN temporarily on your Apple TV, you can disconnect it after use.

From the dedicated Apple TV app:

  1. Open the VPN app on your Apple TV.
  2. Click the Disconnect button using your Siri remote.

From router:

  1. Head to the VPN client’s tab in your router’s Configuration panel.
  2. Click on the Deactivate button next to the VPN name.

Bonus: Use AirPlay to stream geo-restricted content on Apple TV

Want to avoid getting into the hassle of setting up Smart DNS on Apple TV or VPN on the router level? Well, you can do so and still enjoy geo-restricted content on your Apple TV if you have a VPN set up on your iPhone. Here’s how:

  1. Connect your Apple TV and iPhone to the same Wi-Fi network
  2. Launch the VPN app on your iPhone and connect to your desired server
  3. Now, go to the content streaming app and play the geo-restricted content
  4. Once the content starts playing, tap the AirPlay button at the top.
  5. Select your Apple TV from the list of available devices.
  6. Accept the Airplay request on your Apple TV.

I have included this method as a bonus because it might not work for everyone or every streaming platform. But hey, it’s still a workaround that might do the trick for some.

Keep streaming…

I am sure this guide will help you set up and use a VPN on your Apple TV. Whether you want to opt for a VPN service that offers an Apple TV dedicated VPN app or are comfortable setting it up on a router level, the choice is yours.

If you encounter any issues while setting up the VPN, feel free to comment below, and I’ll happily respond.

If you are an avid iMessage user, you’d definitely use emojis to add a touch of color and emotion to your messages. But what if you want to express yourself by combining two or more emojis on an iPhone? Yes, this is possible. On your iPhone, you can stack multiple emojis on top of each other and take your texting game to the next level. In this article, I’ll show you how to combine emojis on an iPhone.

How to stack emoji on your iPhone

To combine emojis on your iPhone, you first need to send an emoji as a sticker and then stack it up with other emojis from your iOS keyboard.

Step 1: Send an emoji as a sticker in iMessage

If you use WhatsApp, you might know how the small heart emoji transforms into a larger animated sticker whenever you send it without text. The same can be done in iMessage for various emojis, but there’s a twist.

In a regular iMessage, an emoji sent without text will display in the chat box without a bubble. However, its size remains normal. The trick to send it as a giant animated sticker is to drag the emoji from the keyboard and drop it in the text input field.

  1. Open the Messages app and head to a conversation
  2. Tap the text box at the bottom to access the keyboard.
  3. Now, tap the emoji icon at the bottom left corner of the keyboard.

Open iMessage, head to the conversation, tap on text box and select the emoji icon
  4. Tap and hold the emoji you want to send.
    • Alternatively, you can use different emoji skin tones for certain emojis.
    • If the emoji you selected has multiple skin tone options, lift your finger and tap & hold the skin tone option you want to use.
  5. Now, drag the selected emoji to the iMessage text field and leave it once the green “+” (plus) icon appears.
  6. In a few seconds, the emoji will transform into a giant sticker. Hit the blue send icon (upward arrow) to share the sticker.

Press and hold the emoji, then drag and drop till you see the green plus icon and hit send

Step 2: Add layers of emojis

Now that you have sent an emoji as a sticker in a message on your iPhone, you can drag and drop N number of emojis over it to create your very own emoji stack.

Here, the process is simpler. You can drag the emoji from the keyboard and drop it directly on the sticker that you just sent. There’s no need to use the text field!

  1. Send your first giant emoji using the method mentioned above.
  2. Again, open the keyboard and tap the emoji icon at the bottom left.
  3. Pick the emoji you want to layer on top of it. Drag and drop it on the first emoji you sent.
  4. Once you are satisfied with the placement, release your finger, and the emoji will be added to the top or alongside the first emoji sticker.

You can repeat this process to add as many emojis as you want to your emoji stack.

Adding a new emoji to the sent emoji stack will automatically reflect on the recipient’s screen as the original message.

Pro Tip

You can also change the size and orientation of the emojis. For example, you can use two fingers to stretch and convert the emoji into a giant or tiny one before sending it.

How to edit or delete emoji stacks on iPhone

Once you have created and sent an emoji stack in iMessage, there may come an instance where you think you overdid the emojis or accidentally added the wrong emoji.

In that case, you can easily remove the emojis from the stack or delete the emoji stack altogether.

Edit or reposition an emoji

  1. To edit an emoji’s size, orientation, and position in the sent emoji stack, tap and hold the emoji
  2. The emoji will see a ripple effect kind of animation and bulk up in size, indicating that you are in control of it now.
  3. Drag the emoji to reposition it, or use your other finger to change its size or orientation.
  4. Once done, release your finger, and the emoji will reflect the changes.

Delete emojis from the stack

  1. Tap and hold the first emoji in the sent emoji stack.
  2. Choose the Sticker details option in the pop-up that appears.
  3. Swipe left on the emoji you want to delete and tap the Delete (trash) button.
  4. Repeat the process for all the emojis you want to remove from the stack.
  5. Once satisfied, tap Done at the top right corner.

Press and hold the emoji, select Sticker Details, swipe left to delete the emoji and tap done
  6. Alternatively, you can delete the entire emoji stack, similar to how you delete an iMessage on your iPhone

Select the emoji stack, tap on delete icon and select Delete Message

This method only works on a combination of emojis. If you have sent an individual animated sticker, you can Undo Send within two minutes of sending it.

Can’t combine emojis on iPhone? How to fix it

While combining emojis on the iPhone is as straightforward as possible, a few users may encounter issues or limitations. To start off, the Messages app can only create and send an emoji stack via iMessage; the same is not possible via SMS.

If you’re using iMessage and still having trouble with combining emojis, here are some troubleshooting tips for you.

  1. Restart your iPhone: Restarting your iPhone is the first thing you must do whenever you encounter an issue. Most of the time, restarting can fix minor software glitches your iPhone might be experiencing. Restart your iPhone and try combining the emojis again.
  2. Reset Keyboard Settings: This will reset any custom keyboard settings you made previously and might fix the emoji-combining issue. Open Settings → General → Transfer or Reset iPhone → Tap Reset → Choose Reset Keyboard Dictionary → Enter your passcode and confirm your choice.

Tap on Reset and select Reset Keyboard Dictionary
  3. Update iOS: iOS updates often include bug fixes and improvements that can address different issues, such as combined emojis not working on your iPhone. Just go to SettingsGeneralSoftware Update → Tap Update Now if you see one available.
  4. Use a third-party app to combine emojis: If the issue persists, try using the best iPhone emoji apps available on the App Store, such as Emoji Me Face Maker or Bitmoji, to create personalized and unique emoji stickers.

Signing off…

And that’s it; this is how you can combine and create an emoji stack on your iPhone. With just a few simple steps, you can elevate your messaging experience, making it more fun.

Apple Check In lets you notify someone when you reach a destination. While it is extremely useful, many have reported the Check In feature not working on their iPhones after updating to iOS 17.4.1. While you can wait for Apple to release a new update with bug fixes, knowing how to handle the issue on your own will always help.

Without any further ado, let’s learn how to fix the iOS 17.4.1 Check In feature not working issue on your iPhone. But first, let’s look at the reasons why it is not working.

Why is Check In not working on iPhone?

There are several reasons why Check In might not be working on iOS 17.4.1. Some of them are listed below:

  • iMessage server outage
  • The participants have not updated their iPhones to iOS 17
  • Cellular or Mobile Data is not enabled
  • Location Services is turned off

9 Solutions to fix iOS 17.4.1 Check In feature not working issue

1. Ensure iOS 17 or later is installed

The iOS Check-In feature is exclusive to iOS 17 or later. So it is obvious that you will receive the “Check-In is not available to send to this recipient” message if the recipient does not have iOS 17 installed on their iPhones.

Therefore, ask your friend or family member to update their iPhone to iOS 17 or later as soon as possible.

2. Check if iMessage server is down

Before performing any drastic troubleshooting, ensure the iMessage server is working correctly.

The iMessage server facilitates the Check In feature, and any disruption in its functioning can prevent access to this new functionality.

To check if the iMessage server is down, visit Apple’s System Status webpage. If you see a green dot beside iMessage, it’s working fine. If otherwise, iMessage is down, and you will have to wait for Apple to solve the issue.

3. Ensure iMessage is enabled

To facilitate the proper functioning of the Check-In feature, try disabling and re-enabling the iMessage service.

  1. Navigate to Settings → Select Messages.
  2. Toggle off iMessage.
  3. Now, restart your iPhone and enable iMessage in a similar process.

    Tap Messages, enable iMessages

4. Force close Messages app

By force-closing and reopening the Messages app, you can potentially fix any underlying technical glitches or bugs causing the Check In feature to malfunction.

Swipe up and hold your Home Screen to launch the App Switcher Swipe up on the Messages app to close it. Wait for a few minutes and reopen the app.

5. Restart your iPhone

Another easy solution to fix the Check In feature not working issue is restarting your iPhone.

It can help resolve software glitches and restore standard functionality.

6. Enable Location Services

If you are experiencing issues with the Check In feature in iOS 17.4.1, it’s wise to ensure that Location Services are enabled for your device.

  1. Navigate to Settings → Tap Privacy & Security.
  2. Select Location Services and ensure that it is toggled on.

Tap Privacy and Security, Location Services, toggle on Location Services
  3. Now scroll down and tap System Services.
  4. Select Significant Locations → Verify your Face ID.
  5. Ensure Significant Locations is enabled.

Tap System Services, Significant Locations, toggle on Significant locations

These steps will allow your device to access your location information accurately, allowing the Check In feature to function correctly.

7. Check Mobile Data

The Check In feature tracks your location and alerts your friends or family when you reach the destination.

So, it needs a strong network connection to keep everything updated. The Check In feature will be unavailable if your iPhone doesn’t have cellular data enabled.

  1. Open Control Center.
  2. Tap the Cellular data icon.

tap cellular data in control center

Tip

You may also turn on Airplane mode for a few seconds and disable it to refresh your network connection.

8. Change Check In data settings

You may face malfunctions if you have not set up Check In for your iPhone properly.

  1. Go to SettingsMessages.
  2. Tap Data under Check In.
  3. Grant Full access to this feature.

Tap Messages, Data, Full in Settings

This will allow you to use the Check In feature on your iPhone without any hassle.

9. Reset Location & Privacy Settings

Last but not least, a quick reset of Location & Privacy Settings might be the solution that can get the Check In feature back to life.

  1. Go to Settings General.
  2. Select Transfer or Reset iPhone Reset.

    General-Transfer-or-Reset-iPhone-Reset-iPhone
  3. Pick Reset Location & Privacy.
  4. Enter your passcode and confirm your choice.

Solutions have reached your location!

Apple Watch gives you quick glances at incoming app notifications, which can be extremely handy on the go. However, several users have faced issues with notifications after updating to watchOS 10.4. This detailed guide showcases a series of tested solutions to help you fix the Apple Watch not showing notifications issue.

How to fix Apple Watch not getting notifications issue

Here are 11 effective ways to troubleshoot an Apple Watch that isn’t showing notifications.

1. Make sure the Apple Watch and iPhone are connected

To check, press the Side Button on your Apple Watch to access the Control Center. If you see a green iPhone icon in the top-left, that means both devices are connected.

For those prompted with any other symbol, like a red iPhone icon, red cross icon, or the Wi-Fi icon, connect both devices by enabling Bluetooth and Wi-Fi. If you are still unable to connect, check out our guide how to pair Apple Watch with iPhone.

Note

If you have enabled AirPlane mode on your Apple Watch or iPhone, turn it off.

2. Force restart the Apple Watch

A simple restart might also do the trick, but in case it doesn’t bring much to the table, consider force restarting the Apple Watch.

In addition to a force restart, it’s also a good idea to restart your iPhone to fix notification woes.

Sometimes, “Have you tried turning it off and on again?” holds some real weight. To the same tune, try unpairing and repairing your Apple Watch.

3. Turn off Do Not Disturb

Do Not Disturb ensures you are not disturbed by any incoming notifications. To fix an Apple Watch that’s not showing notifications, it’s essential that Do Not Disturb is disabled.

  1. Press the Side button to summon the Control Center.
  2. Make sure the crescent moon icon is not purple. If it is, tap the icon to disable Do Not Disturb.

turn off do not disturb on apple watch

If Do Not Disturb was on, this should fix your problem. If the issue persists, head to the next solution.

4. Make sure your Apple Watch is unlocked

Do you see a tiny lock icon on the Watch face? If so, that means your Apple Watch is locked via a passcode. Notifications, by design, are not sent to a locked watch, but its paired iPhone.

Unlock your watch by entering the passcode, and you should start receiving the notifications properly.

Note

You’ll only get notifications on your Apple Watch when your iPhone is locked or asleep. If you’re currently using your iPhone, the alerts will appear on it rather than the watch.

5. Check Notification settings

It may be possible that you might have turned off Apple Watch notifications for one reason or another and haven’t turned them back on yet. Let’s make sure everything is in order.

  1. Open the Watch app on the paired iPhone and tap Notifications.
  2. Tap one of the built-in apps like Activity, and make sure Allow Notifications is enabled.

    Tap Notifications, Activity, Allow Notifications

For other apps like Messages, make sure “Mirror my iPhone” is checked. If you’ve chosen to use custom settings, ensure that Allow Notifications, Sound, and Haptic are enabled (according to your choice).

check notifications are enabled for in-built apps in ios watch app
  3. For third-party apps, make sure the toggle under “MIRROR IPHONE ALERTS FROM:” is enabled.

check notifications are enabled for third-party apps on iphone

If you’ve turned off third-party app notifications for your iPhone, you won’t see the app name in step 3.

6. Connect iPhone to network for third-party app notifications

Your iPhone must be connected to Wi-Fi or cellular data to receive notifications from a third-party app like WhatsApp.

If it isn’t, open Settings on your iPhone, connect to a Wi-Fi network, or turn on Cellular Data.

7. Unpair and re-pair Apple Watch

Finally, if nothing seems to work, unpair the Apple Watch and pair it again.

Make sure to follow the method that involves using the Watch app. This method creates a backup and lets you restore your Apple Watch effortlessly.

8. Update watchOS and iOS

Sometimes, you may not get notifications on your Apple Watch due to a glitch in watchOS 10.4.

It’s of utmost importance to run the version after watchOS 10.4 to ensure bugs from the earlier version are fixed.

You can update directly from the watch or follow the steps below from your iPhone:

  1. Open the Watch app and tap General.
  2. Tap Software Update.
  3. Tap Download and Install. If you see Install Now, the updated file has already been downloaded. Tap it and follow along.

update apple watch from watch app on iphone

To update your iPhone

  1. Open Settings → General → Software Update.
  2. Look for a newly available version of iOS. If there’s an update waiting, download and install it.

open settings tap on general and then tap on software update

Once you’ve updated your Apple Watch and iPhone, restart them both. Make sure they’re properly connected and see if you’re getting notifications (remember, your iPhone must be sleeping to get watch notifications).

9. Disable Cover to Mute

Like Do Not Disturb, Cover to Mute blocks Apple Watch notifications while enabled. To make sure it’s disabled:

  1. Open the Watch app and navigate to My Watch Sounds & Haptics.
  2. Toggle off Cover to Mute.

Tap Sound and Haptics, toggle off cover to mute

Did that fix your notification woes? If it did, you’re good to go. Otherwise, it may be time to look for extra help.

10. Toggle off Wrist Detection

Additionally, some users have had luck getting notifications after they turned off Wrist Detection.

  1. Access the Watch app → navigate to the Passcode menu.
  2. Toggle off Wrist Detection and hit Turn Off when prompted.

Tap Passcode, Toggle of Wrist Detection, Tap Turn Off

11. Contact Apple Support

If nothing else has worked so far, it’s time to contact Apple Support. Their personalized help may be exactly what you need to solve the issue once and for all.

Signing Off…

These are some of the real solutions that have successfully addressed the notification delivery problem on Apple Watches.

We hope that our help solved the issue and that your Apple Watch is receiving notifications flawlessly now.

Software updates on iPhones and iPads involve three primary steps: downloading the updated file, preparing the file for installation, and finally, installing the actual iOS update. In rare instances, the process on your iPhone gets stuck at ‘Preparing Update…’ Significant time passes, and it does not move further. If you are facing this problem while trying to get iOS 17.4.1, here are the solutions to fix it.

1. Clear your iPhone storage

When encountering the frustrating issue of an iOS 17.4.1 update stuck on Preparing to Update, it is essential to have a systematic approach to resolving this problem. One effective solution involves clearing iPhone storage.

This method not only resolves the update obstruction but also ensures smoother device performance by decluttering the iPhone’s storage, ultimately facilitating a hassle-free installation process for the iOS 17.4.1 update.

2. Ensure Wi-Fi connectivity

Make sure that your iPhone is connected to a decent wireless network. While you can download an iOS update via mobile data, it is wiser, faster, and much easier to update your iPhone over a Wi-Fi connection.

  1. Open the Settings app → Wi-Fi → tap the Wi-Fi name to join.
  2. Choose a known network.
  3. Now, open Safari or an app like YouTube and check if the internet is working or not.
Also, ensure the iPhone is adequately charged (above 20%) or connected to power.

3. Reset Network settings

If the problem persists, resetting the network settings can be a potential solution. This issue often arises due to conflicting network configurations or faulty internet connectivity during the update process.

By resetting the network settings, you eliminate any potential glitches in your network configuration that may be hindering the update process.

4. Delete the downloaded update file and re-download it

If the iOS update you have downloaded is corrupted, chances are your iPhone will display the Preparing to update status for a long time. To fix this, re-download the update.

  1. Open the Settings app and tap on General.
  2. Tap on iPhone Storage.
  3. Scroll down and tap Software Update.
Alternatively, some iPhones show iOS 17.4.1 instead of Software Update.

Tap Software Update from iPhone Storage on iPhone
  4. Tap on Delete Update.
  5. Confirm by tapping Delete Update again.

Tap on Delete Update to remove iOS from iPhone
  6. Now, restart your iPhone and download the update again. For this, open the Settings app → General → Software Update → Download and Install.

    open-settings-tap-on-general-and-then-tap-on-software-update

This time, the OTA update should download, prepare, and install without hiccups. Just ensure Wi-Fi is connected and the iPhone is charged or plugged in.

5. Force restart your iPhone

Even after downloading the latest update file, if your iPhone is stuck on Preparing to update, then you should hard reboot your iPhone.

This will force restart the iPhone and get rid of glitches that were hampering the re-installation of iOS 17.4.1.

6. Update iOS using Mac

And even if the above-mentioned steps do not work, learn how to restore your iPhone via Mac or PC. Please note that when you restore, you will also get an option to Update.

Try to update first. If this does not bring any luck, you may proceed with the restoration.

Make the most of iOS 17.4.1!

I hope these fixes have opened your doors to iOS 17.4.1. As you unravel the new software, new features like Live Voicemail and Check-In will make it easier than ever to stay connected and communicate with loved ones on your iPhone.

If you have any further queries or questions, don’t hesitate to post them in the comments below. I’d be happy to answer them.

No matter how advanced the Mac is as a computing device, it can sometimes experience issues like any other tech product. One such issue that many Mac users have been facing is a cryptic message that says, “An error occurred while preparing the installation.”

While this error may seem daunting, it’s actually just an indication of an underlying issue that can be resolved with some simple troubleshooting. With that said, keep reading to learn how to fix this issue on Mac.

What does “An error occurred while preparing the installation” mean?

This error message usually appears when the system is ready to install a macOS version, and a background activity prevents the update from being completed.

The reasons could vary from insufficient disk space on your Mac, corrupted installation files, incorrect date and time issues, or software glitches.

Simply put, the “an error occurred while preparing the installation” error signifies some underlying issues on your Mac, which you must fix before attempting to install macOS again.

8 Ways to fix “an error occurred while preparing the installation” issue

There are various methods you can employ to fix the macOS installation error, from checking the available disk space to reinstalling the OS.

1. Check disk space

While most troubleshooting guides ask you to restart your device to fix a software glitch, insufficient disk space on your Mac can be a major culprit behind the installation error.

So, before restarting your Mac, you must check whether enough space is available to accommodate the installation process. To do so, go to SettingsGeneralStorage.

Check for the storage on Mac

Once you analyze your space, you can delete unnecessary apps or files to create the needed disk space.

2. Check internet connection

A strong internet connection is necessary for your Mac to install the macOS update. A poor connection can interrupt the download and installation process, resulting in an installation error.

So, ensure your Mac is connected to a strong network before you begin.

3. Restart your Mac

If the low disc space or poor internet connection isn’t the issue, it is time for you to restart your Mac. To do so, go to Apple menu → Pick Restart.

A simple restart can often do wonders and resolve minor software glitches on your device that your device is experiencing, including the ones that may be hindering the macOS installation process.

4. Ensure your Mac’s date and time is correct

Incorrect date and time settings on Mac can also disrupt the installation process. Check whether the date and time settings are accurate and correct them if you find any discrepancies.

  1. Open SettingsGeneralDate & Time.
  2. Here, check whether the date and time are correct for your region.
  3. If not, correct both manually or toggle on Set time & date automatically.

Go to General and check for the Date and time settings on your Mac

5. Check Apple servers

This is highly unlikely, but the error could be a result of Apple servers being down.

Go to Apple’s System Status page and check if you see a green dot next to macOS Software Update. If you see a yellow or red dot, it means Apple is working on fixing the issue from their end.

Check macOS Software update apple server status

You just have to sit tight and wait for Apple to resolve the issue. After a few hours, check the status again. If you see a green dot, you can resume the installation of macOS.

6. Boot your Mac in Safe Mode

When you boot your Mac in Safe Mode, only the essential system process and drivers are loaded during the startup. This minimum configuration can help you identify and isolate the issues related to problematic software or drivers causing the macOS installation error during regular startup that may be causing the installation error.

Once you log in to Safe Mode on your Mac, it will perform various checks and only load necessary system components, bypassing third-party extensions, startup, and login items.

7. Run Disk Utility

If booting your Mac in safe mode didn’t do the job for you, consider running Disk Utility. This troubleshooting step identifies and repairs various issues, including but not limited to disk errors, corrupted system files, and permission problems.

  1. Open the Disk Utility on your Mac using Spotlight Search (cmd + space bar).
  2. From the left sidebar, select the Disk you want to check for repairs.
  3. Once done, click the First Aid in the top toolbar.

Open Disk Utility, select the Disk and tap on First Aid in the top toolbar
  4. Click on Run in the pop-up that appears.

    Tap on Run

The Disk Utility will now check the selected disk for errors and, if found any, will attempt to repair them as well.

Once the first aid process is completed, the disk utility will provide a detailed summary of the results, including whether it could repair the errors found. If not, it may offer recommendations for further action.

8. Reinstall macOS

If all the previous methods failed to resolve the “an error occurred while preparing the installation” issue, I recommend reinstalling macOS.

This will erase the existing macOS installation and install a fresh macOS version from scratch.

From Recovery Mode

The macOS Recover Mode allows you to install the current firmware version of the most recently installed macOS firmware on your Mac.

  1. Start up your Mac in Recovery Mode.
  2. Here, select Reinstall macOS and follow the on-screen instructions.

From App Store

  1. Open the App Store on your Mac.
  2. Search for the appropriate macOS version.
  3. Click the Get button.
  4. The Software Update window will open.
  5. Click on Download and follow the on-screen instructions.

9. Erase disk and reinstall macOS

This should only be used as a last resort because it will wipe out all your data. So, make sure to back up your Mac beforehand.

If none of the above solutions work, try to restore your Mac to factory settings and install a macOS version from a Time Machine backup.

Once you do that, you can go to Settings and update your macOS as usual.

Contact Apple Support

If you have tried everything and the “an error occurred while preparing the installation” issue on your Mac persists, I advise you to contact Apple Support for further assistance.

Experts there can provide personalized guidance and troubleshooting steps to overcome this dreaded macOS installation error.

Text message scheduling lets you create a message now and have it automatically sent at a pre-determined time. Unlike emails, scheduling text messages on an iPhone is tricky because Apple does not have a built-in feature for this. That’s where I come in. I have figured out a few workarounds to schedule texts on iPhone, and I’ll walk you through the steps below.

But before we get there, let me address a few queries many of you may have.

Can you schedule a text message on iPhone?

Yes, you can schedule text messages on your iPhone using the Shortcuts app. This method allows you to create a convenient way to send birthday wishes or reminders at a pre-determined time.

Further, if you wish to use advanced customization options to schedule texts, you can take the help of various third-party apps.

Can you schedule an iMessage?

Unfortunately, no. While you can use the Shortcuts app or third-party apps to create text messages beforehand, you can’t use the same for iMessage.

This is because, unlike text messages, iMessages requires an internet connection. Also, both the sender and receiver must use an Apple device, which is a limitation in itself.

Now that we have cleared up that confusion, let’s look at how to send a delayed text message from your iPhone.

How to schedule a text message on iPhone using Shortcuts app

Shortcuts is an incredible app native to iOS devices that allows you to automate various tasks on your iPhone, including scheduling text messages.

  1. Open the Shortcuts app → Pick the Automation tab at the bottom.
  2. Tap New Automation → Choose Time of the day.

Open Shortcuts app, select Automation, Tap New Automation and Choose Time of the day
  3. Now, based on your requirements, adjust the task’s Time and Repeat parameters.
  4. Once done, hit Next.
  5. Pick Send Message under the Get Started section.

Adjust the Time and Repeat parameters, hit Next and select the Send Message
  6. Tap the faded Message bar (in blue) → Enter your desired text.
  7. Next, pick Recipients and add the receiver. You can add multiple contacts.
  8. Tap Done to save your preferences.

Enter message you want to schedule, select Recipients, tap Done and your have scheduled your message on iPhone

That’s it! Now, at your chosen time, a message will be sent to the recipient. Further, if you have enabled Notify When Run while creating the Shortcut, you will get a status update notification as well.

The best part is that since the text will be sent as an SMS, you can send it to any contact on your iPhone!

How to delete a scheduled text message on iPhone

There may come a time when the scheduled text has served its purpose, or maybe you don’t want to send it anymore. In that case, here’s how you can delete the scheduled message.

  1. Open the Shortcuts app → Head to the Automation section.
  2. Swipe left on the Send message automation.
  3. Tap the red Delete button that appears.

Select the Automation tab in Shortcuts app, swipe left on the automation and Tap Delete

Best third-party apps to send scheduled text on iPhone

While you can use the Shortcuts app for text scheduling, the schedule will repeat until you manually delete the automation. Personally, I consider this a major drawback.

So, like me, if you don’t wish to get into this hassle, you can use third-party apps that provide better customization options to schedule texts.

There are many third-party apps, such as AutoSender, SMS Scheduler, and Scheduled on the App Store, that are tailored to schedule text messages from the iPhone.

All you need to do is install and set up the app on your iPhone, and you are good to go.

Can I schedule a text on WhatsApp using my iPhone?

Unfortunately, as of publishing, WhatsApp does not offer an in-app method to schedule texts. However, there’s a workaround. You can send scheduled WhatsApp texts using the Shortcuts app on your iPhone.

Can I edit or cancel a scheduled text on my iPhone?

Yes, you may change or cancel a scheduled message. Go to the automation you created → Select Send Message → Tap the message you’ve written before → Type a new message → Hit Done.

Happy texting!

And that’s it; this is how you schedule text messages on your iPhone. You can create automation using the native Shortcuts app or prefer a simpler approach via third-party apps.

Do you think Apple should provide this feature natively for at least iMessage? I’d like to hear your thoughts. Please share them below!
