Almost all modern smartphones have a nifty feature that dims the light to save your battery and give your eyes a break. But an iPhone screen dimming randomly can be frustrating, especially when you’re particularly interested in whatever’s on your screen.

Most of the time, it’s some brightness-related or battery-saving setting to blame. Sometimes, a software issue may also be at fault.

So why does your iPhone keep dimming unexpectedly? I’ve listed some common reasons and some straightforward solutions.

Why does my iPhone keep dimming its screen?

  • Most phones are “smart” enough to guard your eyes from eye strain. These features automatically sense a change in the lighting conditions around you and, accordingly, adjust your iPhone’s screen brightness. Sometimes, this feature can backfire and cause dimming randomly.
  • If you have any battery saving feature enabled, this might be the culprit to an iPhone screen dimming by itself.
  • Aside from setting problems, software glitches, outdated software, and overheating may also cause your iPhone to dim randomly.

What to do when my iPhone screen dims randomly?

I’ve provided some helpful tips on how to stop your iPhone from dimming. Luckily, many of them are simple settings tweaks that should take next to no time at all.

  1. Disable Auto Brightness
  2. Turn off Always On Display
  3. Disable Screen Zoom
  4. Extend Auto Lock on iPhone
  5. Turn off True Tone on iPhone
  6. Disable Night Shift
  7. Disable Dark Mode on iPhone
  8. Turn on Attention Aware Features
  9. Disable Low Power Mode on iPhone
  10. Toggle off Reduce White Point
  11. Let the iPhone cool down
  12. Update your iPhone to the latest iOS
  13. Reset your iPhone

1. Disable Auto Brightness

Your iPhone typically dims its screen to adapt to ambient lighting. If auto-brightness is enabled, your iPhone will dim its light at night to prevent overwhelming your eyes and give you maximum brightness when you’re out in the sun.

Here’s how to turn it off:

  1. Open the Settings app on your iPhone → Accessibility.
  2. Select Display & Text Size.
  3. Scroll down and toggle off Auto-Brightness.

    Disable auto brightness on iphone

2. Turn off Always On Display

When enabled on your 14 Pro or later model, Always On Display dims your Lock Screen while displaying crucial information like notifications, time, and widgets. This may be why your iPhone screen dims randomly when you aren’t looking.

  1. To turn off Always On Display, go to SettingsDisplay & Brightness.
  2. Scroll down to the bottom and tap Always On Display.
  3. Toggle off Always On Display.

Turn off always on display on iphone

3. Disable Screen Zoom

Zoom is a nifty feature that magnifies the entire screen or just a portion of the screen for you. Zooming in on a particular part of the screen may make your screen seem dim.

  1. To turn Zoom off, go to SettingsAccessibilityZoom.
  2. Toggle off Zoom.

    Disable screen zoom

Instead of Zoom, you can use Magnifier on your iPhone to zoom in on objects.

4. Extend Auto Lock on iPhone

By default, your iPhone locks after 30 seconds. This security feature lets your iPhone screen stay on as long as you’re looking at it since it can detect when you’re looking at the screen. It eventually dims and locks when you look away for a while.

If you want your display to stay on longer, you can change how long it takes before your iPhone screen dims and locks:

  1. Launch SettingsDisplay & Brightness.
  2. Tap Auto-Lock.
  3. Select from the available options. You can select Never if you don’t want it to lock unless you manually lock it.

    Extend auto lock on iphone

5. Turn off True Tone on iPhone

True Tone is a feature similar to Auto-Brightness, which adapts the color of your screen based on lighting conditions surrounding you, to make colors appear consistent with your environment. The color changes can make your iPhone display seem like it’s dimming.

  1. If you don’t want this, head to SettingsDisplay & Brightness.
  2. Toggle off True Tone under Brightness.

Turn off true tone on iPhone

6. Disable Night Shift

Night Shift makes the display easier on the eyes and hopefully makes it easier for you to sleep. However, it may make it more difficult for you to look at your display at night, especially if the settings are set to very warm. To adjust this or turn the feature off entirely:

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Go to Display & Brightness.
  3. Tap Night Shift. Turn it off by toggling off Schedule.
Alternatively, set the screen to be less warm to make it less tinted and dim instead of turning it off.

Disable night shift by toggling off schedule

7. Disable Dark Mode on iPhone

The iPhone tends to have a generally bright display. Turning on Dark Mode changes your iPhone’s color scheme, adopting a black background with text shown in white.

This can offer a better viewing experience in low-light environments but appear dimmer than the iPhone’s usually bright display. Turning it off is easy:

  1. Go to SettingsDisplay & Brightness.
  2. Tick Light to disable Dark Mode.

    Disable dark mode

You can also control Dark Mode directly from your Control Center. Learn how to customize your Control Center and add the Dark Mode button.

8. Turn on Attention Aware Features

Attention Aware Features use Face ID sensors to detect if you’re looking at the screen and dim it when you’re not looking. This works with the Auto-Lock feature mentioned above.

If this feature is disabled, your iPhone will dim and turn off after the time you indicated for Auto-Lock, even when you’re looking at it. Turn it on by doing the following:

  1. Go to SettingsFace ID & Passcode.
  2. Enter your passcode.
  3. Toggle on Attention Aware Features.

    Turn on attention aware features

9. Disable Low Power Mode on iPhone

Low Power Mode will reduce or cut off certain features to save battery life when your iPhone battery drops to a certain percentage. This includes visual effects, the Auto-Lock feature, and display brightness.

This may cause sudden dimming of your iPhone screen, which can be frustrating if you’re in the middle of a visually-intensive task. Fortunately, it’s pretty easy to turn off:

  1. Open SettingsBattery.
  2. Toggle off Low Power Mode.

Disable low power mode on iphone

Alternatively, go to the Control Center and press the Low Power Mode button to deactivate it.

10. Toggle off Reduce White Point

White Point is a display feature that reduces the intensity of bright colors. When enabled, this might make your screen appear dimmer than usual. If you want to keep it turned on, just drag the slider to the left side. Alternatively, you can toggle it off to turn it off.

  1. Go to SettingsAccessibility.
  2. Tap Display & Text Size → Toggle off Reduce White Point.

    Toggle off reduce white point

11. Let the iPhone cool down

If your iPhone’s interior temperature exceeds the normal operating range, it will try to regulate its temperature to protect its internal components. You’ll see a black screen and the warning message “iPhone needs to cool down before you can use it.”

Aside from this, iPhone screens dim when hot, so you’ll likely see a dimmed display and overall slower performance.

Just let your iPhone cool for a while and see if your iPhone’s screen returns to normal.

12. Update your iPhone to the latest iOS

Sometimes, outdated iOS versions can cause annoying glitches and problems. If your iPhone isn’t running the latest version of iOS, try updating it first and see if it stops your iPhone screen from dimming by itself.

  1. Go to SettingsGeneralSoftware Update.
  2. Select Download and Install if an update is available.

13. Reset your iPhone

It’s also possible that some bug is causing the issue. A simple restart can resolve the issue. If this doesn’t help, you might want to reset all your settings.

Note that this won’t affect all your personal data but will return all settings to default. Photos, videos, and saved files will NOT be deleted. However, just to be absolutely certain, it’d be wise to back up the files on your iPhone first.

  1. Open SettingsGeneral.
  2. Scroll down and tap Transfer or Reset iPhone.
  3. Tap ResetReset All Settings.

    Reset all settings on iphone

See if this resolves the iPhone screen dimming by itself.

Notifications play an essential role in our digital lives, keeping us informed about incoming messages, critical alerts, and updates from our favorite apps. However, for one reason or another, not every iPhone user is getting the full benefits of these useful communications.

If notifications are not working on your iPhone after updating to iOS 17.4.1, you’re not alone. This guide is here to help with some easy tweaks, useful hacks, and more.

12 Ways to fix iPhone notifications not working

Notifications not showing up on your iPhone? Unfortunately, it’s a fairly common issue. Thankfully, there are some simple solutions to fix the problem in no time.

1. Restart your iPhone

If your iPhone notifications aren’t working after installing iOS 17.4.1, force restarting the device can often be the quickest and easiest solution.

This process will essentially turn your iPhone off and on again, clearing out any temporary glitches that could be causing problems with app notifications.

To restart your iPhone 8 or newer, press and hold the volume up or volume down button on the left side and the power button on the right side until the slider appears, and drag it from right to left.

Almost all apps on iPhones need a stable internet connection to fetch new data and deliver notifications without any interruptions.

So, if your iOS 17 notifications are not working, make sure you’ve turned on cellular data or Wi-Fi and check for potential network-related issues. Open Safari or a browser of your choice and head to a website like apple.com. If you don’t see any issues, move onto the next solution.

If you’re unsure, you can always turn on Airplane mode, then turn it off after 30 seconds or restart your wireless router if you’re connected over Wi-Fi.

3. Ensure Focus Mode is turned off

Focus Mode can silence notifications, even when you’re not actively using it.

If you’re not receiving notifications after updating to iOS 17.4.1, check if Focus Mode is enabled. Turn it off to ensure all notifications are delivered without fail.

  1. Open the Control Center → Tap and hold Focus.
Focus is replaced by the name of the Focus Mode that’s active.
  2. Select a Focus Mode you want to turn off. Once you turn off a Focus, all banners will go from white to grey.

    enabling Focus Mode on iPhone

Once you deactivate Focus Mode on your iPhone, you should deactivate automatic activation to ensure Focus Mode isn’t enabled automatically.

  1. Open the Control Centre → Tap and hold Focus.
Focus is replaced by the name of the Focus Mode that’s active.
  2. Tap the three-dot menu next to the Focus Mode → Select Settings.

    go-to-focus-mode-settings
  3. Select Smart Activation or Custom Schedule → Tap Delete Schedule.

    delete-focus-mode-schedule

Once the Focus is turned off, ask your friends or family to send you a text to check whether you received the notification or not.

4. Turn off Share Across Devices

One of the many great features of Focus is that you can enable it across all Apple ecosystems. But what if you want the Focus on your Mac/iPad but not on your iPhone?

  1. Go to SettingsFocus.
  2. Toggle off the switch next to Share Across Devices.

    tap-focus-toggle-off-share-across-device-in-settings

And just like that, all our Focus-related escapades are done. Now, it is time to hop on to the Notifications section.

5. Ensure app notifications are enabled on iPhone

If you’re not getting notifications for specific apps on your iPhone, it’s probably because you haven’t allowed the app to send you notifications. To check:

  1. Go to Settings → Notifications → Select an app that’s facing issues.
  2. Toggle on Allow Notifications and Time Sensitive Notifications.
  3. Choose any alerts and banner style → Toggle on Sound.

Check if Instagram notifications are enabled

6. Check in-app notification settings on iPhone

Even if you’ve enabled notifications for an app in your iPhone settings, there might be another layer of control within the app.

Many apps offer their own notification settings, so you can fine-tune how and when you receive alerts. Tweaking these in-app settings can often help you fix iPhone notifications.

For example, you can go to WhatsAppSettingsNotifications and adjust settings as per your preference. Likewise, you can make changes to other apps you use regularly.

If you’re still not getting notifications on your iPhone, it may be because of the Scheduled Summary setting.

7. Turn off Notification summary

Although the Scheduled Summary feature on iPhone can help you manage notifications easily without getting overloaded, it can inadvertently silence alerts you need to see immediately.

Therefore, you should check if turning off Scheduled Summary fixes your iOS 17 notifications.

  1. Go to Settings → Notifications.
  2. Tap Scheduled Summary.
  3. Toggle off Schedule Summary

    turn-off-scheduled-summary

8. Turn off Low Power and Low Data Mode on iPhone

While these modes are useful, they are known to restrict background app refresh on your iPhone. This can cause notifications to be delayed or not delivered.

  • To toggle off Low Power Mode:
    • Go to Settings → Battery → Toggle off Low Power Mode.

To toggle off Low Power Mode
      ‍
  • To toggle off Low Data Mode for Cellular:
    • Go to Settings → Cellular → Cellular Data Options.
If you use dual SIMs, select a SIM to locate Cellular Data Options.

Go to Cellular Data Options from Cellular in Settings
    • Tap Data Mode → Deselect Low Data Mode.

Tap Data Mode and Deselect Low Data Mode.
  • To disable Low Data Mode for Wi-Fi:
    • Navigate to Settings → Wi-Fi.
    • Tap the blue ‘i’ icon next to a network → Turn off Low Data Mode.

      Toggle off Low Data Mode

9. Enable Background App refresh

If background app refresh is disabled for an app, it might be unable to deliver notifications.

Many iPhone apps rely on background app refresh to stay up-to-date and deliver timely notifications. So, do the following to check if this setting is enabled:

  1. Locate and open the Settings app on your iPhone or iPad.
  2. Navigate to General → Background App Refresh.

    go-to-general-background-app-refresh
  3. Tap Background App Refresh → Select Wi-Fi & Cellular Data.
  4. Go Back and enable the toggle next to the apps you use.

    toggle-on-background-app-refresh

10. Install latest iOS update

Many iPhone users have reported bugs with iOS 17.4.1 notifications.

If it is indeed a software glitch, Apple will soon fix it with a software update. So, install the latest iOS version as soon as Apple releases it. This will ensure you have the latest bug fixes and other refinements.

  1. Navigate to Settings → General → Software Update.
  2. Tap Update Now if a software update is available.

Click on Update now for Software Update

11. Reset all settings on your iPhone

If you’ve tried all the above troubleshooting tips and the iPhone notifications are still acting up, you may have to Reset All Settings.

This will revert your iPhone’s settings to the factory defaults, potentially eliminating any underlying issues to fix notifications not working after updating to iOS 17.4.1.

Note This will NOT delete any photos, videos, or files saved to your iPhone. It will, however, reset your wallpaper to the default background and erase your PIN password to access the phone.
  1. Go to Settings → General → Transfer or Reset iPhone.

Go to Settings then General Transfer or Reset iPhone
  2. Tap Reset → Reset All Settings.
  3. Enter your iPhone or iPad’s Passcode.

Tap Reset then Transfer or Reset iPhone
  4. Tap Reset All Settings again to complete the process.

12. Contact Apple for technical support

If you’ve tried all the solutions to this point and your iPhone notifications still aren’t working in iOS 17.4.1, the next best step is to contact Apple Support directly. They have a team of trained technicians who can help you diagnose and fix the issue.

Why are my notifications not showing up on iPhone?

You may not be getting notifications on your iPhone for a number of reasons. Typically, the fixes are easy settings tweaks like disabling Focus Mode, enabling background app refresh, or updating to the latest iOS version.

Did notifications change after iOS 17 update?

While notifications didn’t change fundamentally in iOS 17, Apple did change the default text tone. If your iPhone notifications aren’t showing up, it’s likely because of a settings issue or an outdated iOS version.

You’re jamming out to a particular song and want to hear it every time you get a call or text. But is it possible to set a song as your iPhone ringtone without iTunes or your computer?

Yes, it can be done! Whether a custom sound like your child’s voice, a music piece, or external ringtones, your iPhone allows you to be the decision-maker. In this article, I will show you how to set a song as a ringtone on your iPhone, so stick along.

How to set a song as a ringtone on iPhone without iTunes

Here are a few things to keep in mind before we get started:

  • Locally Saved – The track you want as a ringtone should be stored in your iPhone Music Library or the Files app. Protected songs (like from Apple Music) cannot be used.
  • The app – You’ll need to download and install one of two apps:

We’ll be using GarageBand for this tutorial. Now, let’s move on to the next step.

How to make a custom ringtone on iPhone with GarageBand

Keep in mind that the track you want as a ringtone must be stored in your iPhone Music Library or the Files app. Protected songs (like from Apple Music) cannot be used as tracks have to be DRM-free.

For this tutorial, I have downloaded a ringtone from Zedge. You can use a website or source of your choice.

  1. Launch the GarageBand app on your iPhone.

Launch GarageBand app on your iPhone
  2. Swipe and find Audio Recorder from the options, and tap Voice (mic icon).
You can also use Keyboard or Drummer for this purpose.

In Audio Recorder option tap on Voice
  3. Here, tap View (brick wall-like icon) to enter the editing section.

Tap View to enter the editing section on iPhone
  4. Tap the Loop icon. You’ll see three subheadings here – Apple Loops, Files, and Music.

pdfFiller PDF editor for iPhone and iPad app

pdfFiller is a cloud-based, all-in-one software suite (interlink pdfFiller). It is designed with an extensive array of features capable of handling almost all PDF-related needs.

You can create a new PDF from scratch or edit an existing one with limitless options. And while the mobile app has a super-friendly interface, it only offers limited features via the app; the rest you’ll have to manage via the web dashboard.

Annotation

No other app offers such an extensive annotation option. You can add text boxes, shapes (cross, circle, arrow), images, videos, sticky notes, highlight, blackout, signature, and more.

And the best part is that you don’t have to forage for these tools, as all are neatly laid out on the top bar.

Forms and signatures

In its multitude of services, pdfFiller also doubles as a document signer and forms hosting platform. But what makes it stand out is the attention to detail.

For instance, when inviting others for signing, you can decide the signature hierarchy, mark fields as required, request supporting documents, and even use the signer’s Facebook or LinkedIn profile to authenticate their identity.

As for hosting fillable forms, you won’t need any special coding knowledge. Just create the PDF and send it via email or create a QR code. And later, you can even use a bulk extract tool to collect all the data into an Excel sheet or CRM software.

Collaboration and integration

Inviting someone to edit or sign a PDF is as simple as sending them an email invite or creating QR codes. Moreover, pdfFiller seamlessly syncs with CRM software like Salesforce and Xero.

You can also access and sign documents within Google Docs, Gmail, Google Sheets, Office 365, and cloud services like Google Drive, DropBox, Box.net, etc.

Overall, pdfFiller is a remarkable PDF editing software, and even though some features are missing from the iOS app, it is worth investing in.

AirDrop is one of the highlights of the Apple ecosystem. It makes sharing photos, videos, and files among macOS and iOS devices effortless. The process is fast and secure and preserves the original quality. However, things become frustrating when AirDrop does not work on your Apple devices.

Why is AirDrop not working?

There are several potential reasons for the non-functioning AirDrop. So, before troubleshooting the issue, you find the root cause.

You may be unable to send files over AirDrop due to software glitches, device compatibility issues, network issues, incorrect visibility settings, or distance issues.

However, you can easily address all the issues and start using AirDrop again.

14 ways to fix AirDrop is not working on your Apple devices

Several factors ensure your files are transferred successfully via AirDrop. Here, I have listed potential solutions if AirDrop fails to work.

1. Check device compatibility

Before anything else, it’s essential to ensure your Apple device supports AirDrop. At the time of writing, you can use AirDrop with the following:

  • iPhone (iPhone 5 or newer)
  • iPod Touch (5th generation or newer)
  • iPad mini
  • iPad (4th generation or later)
  • Mac (manufactured in 2012 or later)

2. Unlock the receiver’s device

If you’re trying to send a file via AirDrop, ensure the target Apple device is unlocked and awake. Your device won’t be able to detect the target device if it isn’t awake. Plus, ensure that both devices are within 30 feet (9 meters) of each other.

Additionally, make sure that your Mac’s display is turned on. Don’t put your Mac to sleep while sending or receiving files via AirDrop.

3. Turn off personal hotspot on iPhone or iPad

Both Personal Hotspot and AirDrop utilize your Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connections. That said, you won’t be able to use AirDrop if you’re hosting a personal hotspot on your iPhone.

The only way to make AirDrop work is to temporarily turn off your hotspot. Go to Settings → Personal Hotspot → Toggle off Allow Others to Join.

4. Enable Wi-Fi and Bluetooth

Make sure that both Bluetooth and Wi-Fi are enabled on both devices and connected to the same network.

Don’t worry. Your device doesn’t necessarily have to be connected to the internet — you simply must turn these on.

  • On your iPhone or iPad: Access the Control Center → Tap the Wi-Fi and Bluetooth icons to enable them (the icons should turn blue).

Enable Wifi and Bluetooth in Control Center on iPhone
  • On your Mac: Click the Control Center icon in the menu bar → Click the Bluetooth and Wi-Fi icons to enable them (the icons should turn blue).

Toggle on Bluetooth and Wifi on Mac

Secret Tip:

Though AirDrop works even when devices are connected to different Wi-Fi networks, connecting to the same network helps, especially when sharing between iOS and Mac.

5. Reset your devices

A hard reset is often all you need to eliminate the bugs and glitches affecting your device’s functionality.

6. Check AirDrop Visibility Settings

AirDrop has three settings:

  • No One/Receiving Off: This prevents everyone from discovering your device.
  • Contacts Only: Allows only people with mobile numbers or email addresses saved in your contacts to send you files.
  • Everyone/Everyone for 10 minutes: Allows everyone to discover your device and send files.

While the Contacts Only option tightens your device’s security, it prevents people who aren’t saved in your Contact from sending you files.

Meanwhile, when you receive Contacts Only, Apple requires that both devices be signed in to their iCloud accounts.

7. Turn off Airplane Mode

When enabled, Airplane Mode shuts down all your wireless connections, including Bluetooth and Wi-Fi.

Disable Airplane Mode on your iPhone or iPad by going to Settings → toggle Airplane Mode off.

8. Turn off DND or Focus Mode

While you can still send files to others via AirDrop while on a particular Focus mode, the opposite is true regarding receiving AirDrop transfers.

This is because enabling Do Not Disturb and other Focus blocks AirDrop alerts and notifications and renders devices undiscoverable.

9. Turn off AirDrop Restrictions

If you can’t find the AirDrop icon, you or someone else might have blocked it using your device’s Restrictions feature.

On iPhone or iPad:

  1. Open Settings → Screen Time.
  2. Tap Content & Privacy Restrictions.

Go to Content and Privacy Restrictions from Screen Time
  3. Select Allowed Apps. Make sure that AirDrop is enabled.

Go to Allowed apps and Toggle on AirDrop

On your Mac:

  1. Open System Settings → Screen Time.
  2. Click Content & Privacy. You don’t need to proceed if you have Content & Privacy turned off.

Go to Content and Privacy on Mac
  3. Select App Restrictions.

    Select App Restrictions
  4. Toggle AirDrop on and Select Done.

Toggle on AirDrop on Mac and Select Done

10. Sign In to your Apple Account

Signing out and signing back in on your Apple ID can get your AirDrop to work again.

  • On your iPhone or iPad: Go to Settings → Tap your account and choose Sign Out.
  • On your Mac: Go to System Settings → select your account and Sign Out.

Wait for some time, and sign back in.

11. Check storage on your devices

AirDrop saves files received in the Downloads folder by default. So, ensure your system has enough space to store them.

To check storage space:

  • On iPhone: Go to SettingsGeneral → iPhone storage. If you don’t have enough space, free up some.
  • On Mac: Go to System SettingsGeneralStorage. Free up disk space on your Mac if you don’t have enough.

Additionally, if you received a file on your device via AirDrop and you can’t find it, don’t immediately assume that your AirDrop is malfunctioning. Try to check your Downloads folder.

  • On iPhone, open the Files app and look for a Downloads folder.
  • Meanwhile, you can usually find the Downloads folder on your Mac by opening a new Finder window and pressing Option + Cmd + L.

12. Turn off VPN

Some users reported that their AirDrop didn’t work until they turned off their VPN. If you’re using a third-party VPN app, turn it off. Here’s how to disable VPN on your device’s settings.

  • On your iPhone or iPad: Go to Settings → Toggle off VPN. If you are using a third-party app, disconnect the service from there.
  • On your Mac: Go to System Settings → Select VPN on the sidebar and disable the service. If you can’t see it, VPN is not enabled on your Mac or you must be using a third-party app. If it’s the latter, disable the service from the app.

13. Update your OS

Make sure to keep your device/s running on the latest OS. Beta OS versions are also notorious for their glitches and bugs.

So, if you’re using a beta version, revert to the older, most stable OS for your iPhone or Mac; this might be the reason behind your AirDrop not working after an update.

14. Reset Network Settings

Resetting your Network Settings can help fix all network and connectivity issues, such as Wi-Fi and AirDrop problems. However, resetting these settings will also cause your device to forget your saved passwords, requiring you to reconnect and enter them again.

On your iPhone or iPad:

  1. Go to Settings → General
  2. Select Transfer or Reset [device] → Tap Reset

tap general, tap transfer or reset iphone, tap reset in settings
  3. Tap Reset Network Settings and Enter your passcode.

Tap reset network setting, enter passcode in settings

Sadly, Macs don’t have a dedicated button for resetting your Network Settings. However, you can use some workarounds mentioned in our guide to reset network settings on Mac.

Wrapping up…

These were the tested solutions to fix the AirDrop issue on your iPhone, iPad, and Mac. I hope one of the solutions here fixed the problem for you.

If none of these fixes helped resolve the issue, it might be a hardware problem. You should contact Apple Support to get a resolution.

For several people and organizations (like ours), AirDrop is an essential tool. We use it daily to share article screenshots, office celebration videos, and more. How often do you use it? Share your thoughts with us in the comments section below.

]]>
Is your FaceTime not working or unavailable after updating to iOS 17.4.1? Or are you facing choppy FaceTime calls or black screen issues? Don’t worry, and we’ll make fixing FaceTime as easy as it can be. But first, here’s a look at the potential reasons why FaceTime is not working on your iPhone or iPad.

Why is FaceTime not working on iPhone?

Before heading into the solutions, reviewing some common culprits may tell you why FaceTime calls aren’t connecting:

  • FaceTime server may be down.
  • You have selected the wrong phone number or email address to make or receive calls.
  • Poor internet connection.
  • Incorrect date and time settings.
  • FaceTime is not supported in your region, device, or carrier plan. To check, visit Apple’s Support page
  • Glitches in iOS 17.4.1.
  • Camera or mic hardware damage.

10 Ways to fix FaceTime not working on iPhone

Now that we have analyzed the root causes, let’s explore the solutions to enjoy FaceTime calls again.

1. Check FaceTime’s server status

Head to Apple’s System Status page and check the status light next to FaceTime. If it’s green, it’s up and running. Otherwise, give it some time to come back online.

2. Restart your iPhone or iPad

Restarting your device can often fix minor glitches that stop FaceTime from functioning properly.

The process of restarting an iPhone or iPad is slightly different based on its model (if it has a home button or not, etc.)

For most models, you can simply go to Settings General Shut down. Now wait for a few seconds and turn on your iPhone or iPad.

If you need more help, check out our guide on how to restart your iPhone or iPad.

3. Set Date and Time to Automatic

This trick may be the answer to your problems.

To set Date and Time to Automatic, navigate to Settings General Date & Time. Toggle Set Automatically off and on again.

Tap-general-date-and-time-toggle-on-set-automatically-in-settings

4. Check your internet connection

Go to Settings Wi-Fi and make sure it’s turned on. Then, make sure your Wi-Fi connection is selected and connected.

If you are using cellular data, go to Settings Cellular Data and ensure you have turned it on and allowed access to FaceTime.

Select Mobile Service and check mobile data is ebale for FaceTime

At times, you might have an active internet connection, but it might not be strong enough to handle FaceTime video calls.

This is likely the case if you frequently see poor connection alerts, choppy video, or black screen during your calls.

So, ensure both the caller and receiver are on active cellular data plans that offer blazing-fast internet.

5. Select correct Apple ID or phone number

To use FaceTime, you must make sure you have selected the correct Apple ID or phone number.

  1. Go to Settings FaceTime.
  2. Scroll down to YOU CAN BE REACHED BY FACETIME AT and check that your ID and number are checked.

Select FaceTime, Scroll down and check correct Apple ID or phone number is selected

If you can’t see your Apple ID or phone number, here are a few things you can do:

  • Fix the FaceTime “Waiting for Activation” error if that is displayed on your screen.
  • If you have enabled Content & Privacy restrictions, FaceTime isn’t restricted. Head to Settings → Screen Time → Content & Privacy Restrictions → Allowed Apps. Make sure FaceTime is allowed (toggled on).

6. Sign out and back into FaceTime

Navigate to Settings FaceTime. Toggle FaceTime off, then back on again.

Open Settings, Tap on FaceTime, and Turn on FaceTime

It will resolve minor glitches stopping FaceTime from working in iOS 17.4.1. Make sure to sign out of FaceTime on your Mac as well if you have one.

Is FaceTime working? If not, head to the next solution.

7. Check iPhone camera and mic

If the caller can’t see you or hear you, you must ensure your camera and mic are working properly.

  • Launch the Camera app and see what it is capturing on both the back and front camera.
  • Next, launch Voice Memos app and start recording. Play the clip to check if you can hear yourself speaking.

A hardware problem might be the cause if your cameras or mic is not producing anything. On the other hand, if the microphone and camera function flawlessly, there could be a FaceTime-specific issue.

8. Update iOS

Go to Settings General Software Update. If there’s an update after iOS 17.4.1 available, Download and Install it.

If FaceTime is working as expected now, you’re good to go. Otherwise, try out the next fix.

9. Allow certain ports in your Firewall

If your network is protected by a firewall, you may have to do some extra heavy lifting to enable FaceTime on your iPhone.

Check which ports you need to allow on Apple’s support site

10. Reset all settings on iPhone

Used as a last-ditch effort, resetting all settings on your iPhone may solve your problem. Make sure to back up your iPhone before performing any large-scale measures such as resetting all data.

Head to Settings General Transfer or Reset iPhone. Tap Reset, then Reset All Settings. Enter your passcode, then tap Reset All Settings one more time to confirm.

Reset-all-settings-on-iPhone

Now, check FaceTime to see if it works.

Conclusion

We hope these solutions helped you get FaceTime working again! If you’re still stuck, you can contact Apple Support or let us know about your situation in the comments below. We’ll do our best to help you out.

Apple users are all too familiar with the limited personalization options of Apple products. However, on your Mac, you can customize the Safari start page on your Mac for a more personal experience. This includes things like setting a custom wallpaper, seeing Siri suggestions for webpages that may interest you, a privacy report about the sites you’re visiting, your favorites, Reading List, and more. Let’s check out the details.

How to customize Safari Start Page features on Mac

Safari’s Start Page is the first thing you’ll see when opening a Safari window. This makes it an ideal place to store all the websites you regularly visit.

Of course, you can also make tab groups on Safari when managing several tabs and keeping things organized, but a customized Start Page lets you do more.

If you can’t see Safari’s Start Page when you launch Safari, you can set it to appear when you open a new window. Here’s how to do it:

  1. Open Safari → head over to the menu bar and click Safari.
  2. Select Settings.

Click Safari and Settings on Mac
  3. Click the General tab and select Start Page on the dropdown menu beside New windows open with.

Now, let’s take a look at some Safari Start Page features you can add or remove:

1. Change home page background image

The first thing you’ll notice is the plain gray background when you launch Safari. While nothing’s wrong with that, you can add life to your Safari by choosing a livelier background than that. To do this:

  1. Open a new window and click the menu icon at the bottom right.
  2. Tick Background image → click the Add (+) icon.

Change Safari Start Page background on Mac
  3. Select from the available images from the Desktop photos or choose an image from a different folder.

    Select Background on Mac

To change the background image, just remove the background image by clicking the Close (X) button and select a new one.

Click x to remove background image on Mac

2. Add Favorites for quick access

While your Bookmarks are safely tucked on your Safari sidebar, you can add select websites you frequent to make them more easily accessible. To do so:

  1. Open the website.
  2. Right-click the plus icon beside the website.
  3. Select Favorites.

Add Favorites to Safari Start Page on Mac

When you open a new window, you should see an icon of the website added under Favorites. You can also access all your favorites from the sidebar. Just click Favorites to expand it.

You can check out our detailed guide if you wish to further add, view, or remove Favorites in Safari on Mac.

3. Add your Reading List to Safari Start Page

There are webpages that we just want to save for future reading but aren’t that important to get to our Favorites list. If so, the Reading List is the best place for them. Just open a new window and tick Reading List in the menu icon.

Whenever you’re on a webpage you want to save, just click Shift + Cmd (⌘) + D to save it to your Reading List instantly.

Saving things you want to read later in your Start Page Reading List is a great visual reminder that makes it more likely that you’ll read it the next time you see it.

4. Use iCloud to sync Safari tabs across devices

Similarly, you can enable iCloud for Safari on all your devices, which makes it easy to work across your devices.

Ensure you’re signed in on the same Apple ID, and that Safari is turned on in all your device’s iCloud Settings. Here’s how you can turn on iCloud on your devices:

On your Mac:

  1. Go to Apple menu → System Settings.
  2. Select [your name] at the top of the sidebar → click iCloud on the right.

Click on Profile and iCloud on Mac
  3. Turn on Safari.

Turn ON Safari in iCloud on Mac

On your iPhone/iPad:

  1. Go to Settings → [your name] → iCloud.
  2. Tap Show All → toggle Safari on.

5. Use the same Safari Start Page on all Apple devices

If you’re using the Apple ecosystem, having the same Start Page settings on all devices can be handy to access all your Favorites and Reading Lists, whatever device you’re using at the moment.

To enable this setting, click the menu icon at the bottom right and select Use Start Page on All Devices.

Click menu bar icon, and select Start Page on all devices to sync Safari home page

6. Display Privacy Report

Apple takes privacy and security seriously. If you’re wary of the pages you’re visiting and which sites are trying to track your activity, Safari’s Privacy Report shows you how many trackers it has blocked and which sites want to track you.

The feature is enabled by default, and you will find the report on your Start Page.

If you can’t find it, just click the menu icon at the bottom right and select Privacy Report.

7. Other useful Safari Start Page features

Aside from those mentioned above, below are other features that you may want to see on your Safari Start Page:

  • Recently Closed Tabs: This shows you websites from the tabs you recently closed in the selected Tab Group.
  • Frequently Visited: This indicates the sites you recently or frequently visited.
  • Shared With You: this contains videos, stories, news, and other links shared with you on Messages.
  • Siri Suggestions: this shows suggested websites found in Mail, Messages, and other apps.

How to hide or unhide Safari Start Page items

The Safari Start Page is fully customizable and lets you choose which items you want to show and which ones you want to hide.

To show or hide items, click the Start Page menu icon at the bottom right and check or uncheck the items based on your preferences.

How to delete items from Safari home page on Mac

You need to manually delete each item to remove them on the Safari Start Page. This works for items on the Reading ListFavorites, and Frequently Visited sites. Just right-click the item you want to delete and select Delete or Remove Item.

If you keep seeing Siri Suggestions that you don’t want to show up anymore, right-click it and select Don’t Suggest This Website in the popup menu.

How to rearrange items on Safari Start Page on Mac

You can also rearrange the start page options in the order you want them to appear. Just go to the menu icon at the bottom right and drag each item up or down to rearrange them.

Wrapping up…

The Safari Start Page is a powerful tool to help you quickly access your favorite websites and content. All these features make Safari your go-to browser for all your internet needs.

If you have other Apple devices, take advantage of the synchronized Safari settings across all your devices. This will ensure you have the same Start Page on all your devices.

Hope this helps!

Have you ever wondered how your Mac’s battery is keeping up after you charge it? Lucky for you, macOS provides a built-in tool that allows you to check your Mac’s battery usage history. This can help you identify trends in battery usage and make adjustments to optimize the battery life.

This guide will walk you through the steps to access and interpret your battery usage history on a Mac. I’ll also introduce you to a free third-party tool that offers a user-friendly method for monitoring battery health and performance. Let’s get started.

How to view Mac battery usage from System Settings

All macOS versions, including macOS Big Sur and later, offer a handy tool in System Settings to check the overall battery usage over the last 24 hours or last ten days. Here’s how to access it:

  1. Click the Apple logo in the Menu bar → Select System Settings.

Click on the Apple Logo and select System Settings on Mac
  2. Select Battery from the sidebar and view the battery usage graph on the right.
You can also click the Battery icon in the menu bar → Pick Battery Settings to view this page
  3. Click Last 24 Hours or Last 10 Days to check battery usage for that period.

Select Battery and view the battery usage graph on Mac

On the Battery settings page, you can enable Low Power Mode, check battery health, and view multiple graphs related to your MacBook’s battery usage. Here’s what these graphs mean:

  • Battery Level: Plotted at regular intervals of 15 minutes, this graph shows the average charge level. Moreover, the area with a green line indicates when your Mac was plugged in for charge.

    Battery level on Mac
  • Screen On Usage: Plotted at regular intervals of 3 hours, this graph shows how long your Mac screen was on after it was completely charged. Further, you can use the Screen Time feature to monitor which apps are consuming most of your time.

    Screen on Usage on Mac
  • Energy Usage: You’ll find this in the Last 10 Days tab. This graph shows the amount of energy your Mac has consumed each day.

Last 10 days energy usage on Mac

Further, on the Battery Settings page, you can click on the (i) info icon next to Battery Health to view your Mac’s battery health or enable Optimized Battery Charging to reduce battery aging.

Check Mac battery usage using Coconut battery

Besides the built-in feature in macOS, you can also use third-party tools like Coconut Battery to check the battery usage on your Mac.

Coconut Battery is user-friendly and provides detailed usage statistics and historical data in comparison to the built-in macOS tool. So, I’d definitely recommend giving this tool a shot.

  1. Download Coconut Battery from the official website.
  2. Extract the zip file and launch the Coconut Battery app.
  3. Go to the History tab → Then, click Open History Viewer.

Click on the History tab in Coconut battery tab and click on open history viewer

After looking at the usage statistics, if you find that your Mac battery is draining faster than expected, here are some practices you can employ to reduce battery usage.

Tips to reduce battery usage on Mac

So, here’s a short list of simple yet effective ways to reduce battery usage on your MacBook and improve its lifespan.

  • Adjust your display settings: Lowering the screen brightness can significantly reduce Mac’s power consumption, as the display is one of the most energy-hungry components.
  • Change your power settings: Try to use your MacBook in Low Power Mode whenever possible. This will help reduce your system’s overall power consumption by throttling processor and graphics performance and limiting unnecessary background activities.
  • Try reducing the hardware usage: Turn off Wi-Fi and Bluetooth when they’re not in use. Additionally, remember to disconnect any external devices once you’re done using them.
  • Quit unused apps: It’s a good practice to quit unused apps and remove background apps on your Mac to prevent them from consuming battery resources in the background. You can open the Activity Monitor to do this.

For more such tips, you can check out our detailed guide on improving the battery life of Apple Silicon Macs.

Wrapping up…

There you have it, folks! With the methods outlined in this guide, you can easily check your Mac’s battery usage history. By understanding your battery usage patterns, you can identify battery-related issues early on and optimize settings to extend its lifespan.

If you have any other doubts or questions, please leave them in the comments section.
