Apple regularly releases firmware updates to improve battery life, address software glitches, and introduce new device features. However, unlike Macs and iPhones, firmware updates for your AirPods typically don’t trigger notifications. Instead, these updates are automatically installed on your AirPods when kept for charging or brought within the Bluetooth range of your iPhone, iPad, or Mac.

However, there are instances when AirPods may not remain up to date. Fortunately, you can check the AirPods firmware version and manually update it using an iPhone, iPad, or Mac. Here’s all you need to know.

Latest AirPods firmware updates

Apple’s release notes for the latest firmware updates were published on its official support page on April 3, 2024.

Based on that, I can confirm that the following are the latest firmware versions available for your AirPods model:

  • AirPods Pro (2nd generation) with MagSafe Charging Case (USB-C): 6B34
  • AirPods Pro (2nd generation) with MagSafe Charging Case (Lightning): 6B34
  • AirPods Pro (1st generation): 6A321
  • AirPods (2nd and 3rd generation): 6A321
  • AirPods Max: 6A325
  • AirPods (1st generation): 6.8.8

Now, let us see how to check your AirPods existing firmware and, if needed, how to ensure it updates.

How to check AirPods or AirPods Pro firmware version

You can check the AirPods firmware version from your connected iPhone, iPad, or Mac. Below are the steps to do so

On iPhone or iPad

To check your AirPods firmware on your iPhone or iPad, be sure to update your iOS or iPadOS to the latest version. Then do the following:

  1. Go to Settings → Bluetooth.
  2. Select the info (i) button next to the AirPods.
  3. You can see the version of your AirPods under the About section.

Check AirPods or AirPods Pro firmware on iPhone or iPad

If the version displayed here is the latest, you do not have to do anything. Enjoy!

If outdated, your iPhone will automatically download and install the firmware on your AirPods.

On Mac

First, make sure your Mac runs the latest macOS, then do the following.

  1. Go to Apple Menu → Press and hold the Option key to view System Information.
  2. Now, select System Information → Pick Bluetooth in the left pane.
  3. Now, look under your AirPods to find its firmware version.

Alternatively, if you’re using a Mac running macOS Ventura or later:

  1. Head to the Apple Menu → System Settings → Bluetooth.
  2. Then click the Info (i) button next to your AirPods.

See AirPods firmware version on Mac

How to force update AirPods, AirPods Pro, or AirPods Max

As mentioned previously, Apple automatically delivers firmware updates to your AirPods. If it doesn’t seem to work, you can manually force a firmware update on AirPods. Here’s how:

  1. Put the AirPods inside their charging case and connect them to power via a Lightning cable or Wireless charger.
In the case of AirPods Max, you just need to plug the charging cable into the headphones.
  2. Make sure your iPhone is connected to a stable Wi-Fi network. It would also help to put the iPhone in charging. Also, ensure Low Power Mode is off.
  3. Now, keep the iPhone and the AirPods case close and wait for a few minutes.

This process should complete the firmware update in the background. After about 20 minutes, you can go back and check to see if your firmware version has been updated.

Wrapping up…

This is how to update your AirPods and enjoy all the latest features Apple has for your wireless audio device. If you have additional questions, please reach me via the comments section below.

AirPods are undoubtedly the best when it comes to true wireless earphones. However, even the best can sometimes encounter issues. One common issue many AirPods users have encountered is the problem of AirPods not connecting to their iPhones after updating to iOS 17.4.1. If you are one of them, here are the tried and trusted fixes you must try.

How to fix AirPods not connecting to iPhone

There are several reasons why AirPods may not connect to an iPhone. Below are some practical solutions to fix the issue.

1. Make sure iPhone’s Bluetooth is on

Like any other true wireless earbuds, Apple AirPods also relies on BlueTooth to connect with your iPhone. So, if you find that your AirPods or AirPods Pro are not connecting to your iPhone, take a quick look at the Bluetooth settings on your iPhone.

Go to SettingsBluetooth → Make sure Bluetooth is turned on.

Open Settings, Go to Bluetooth, and Turn on Blutooth

Alternatively, you can open Control Center and ensure the Bluetooth tile is blue.

Turn on Blutooth from the Control Center

2. Fix the pairing issue

AirPods don’t have a physical button to turn them off. They just nest inside the case and sleep.

If you’re facing connection issues between your iPhone and AirPods:

  1. Simply place both the AirPods stems inside the charging case and close the lid.
  2. Now, wait for 15 seconds and lift the case lid.
  3. Then connect the AirPods and iPhone again.

This may fix the problem you’re facing.

3. Ensure the AirPods have enough battery

When your AirPods have low battery, they might struggle to maintain a stable connection with your iPhone.

This can lead to intermittent connectivity issues such as audio dropouts or difficulty pairing. To ensure consistent performance, keep your AirPods and charging case charged.

4. Turn Bluetooth off and on

  1. If the above two solutions didn’t work, head over to SettingsBluetooth and tap the Bluetooth toggle to turn it off entirely. (Do not use Control Center.)

Turn bluetooth off when youre not using it on iphone
  2. After a few seconds, turn Bluetooth on and try to pair your AirPods again.
  3. Open the AirPods charging case lid. You will see your AirPods under MY DEVICES. Tap your AirPods.

5. Forget and Re-Pair Your AirPods

If the issue persists, you can try forgetting your AirPods from your iPhone’s Bluetooth settings and then re-pairing them.

  1. Go to SettingsBluetooth on your iPhone.
  2. Tap the info (i) icon next to your AirPods.
  3. Select Forget This Device.

    Forget-and-reconnect-the-device-on-iPhone
  4. Then, follow the steps to re-pair your AirPods with your iPhone.

6. Restart your iPhone

As we’ve mentioned many times before on iGeeksBlog, restarting your iPhone can fix a myriad of issues. Let’s see if this old trick can get the job done.

  1. Press and hold the Power button and one of the Volume buttons until you see the slider.
  2. Slide to power off your iPhone.
  3. Wait for a minute or so. To restart, press and hold the Power button until you see the Apple logo.

Once the iPhone boots up again, check your AirPods connection. It should work; if not, head to the next solution.

7. Make sure you have the latest AirPods firmware

I used the words ‘make sure’ in the header and not ‘update your AirPods to the latest firmware‘ because you cannot.

Apple does this automatically in the background, and you get no pop-up saying, ‘Hey, your AirPods are now running the latest version.’

To check if you are running the latest AirPods firmware:

  1. Go to SettingsBluetooth → Tap the info (i) icon next to your AirPods.
  2. Scroll down to Firmware and spot your update version.
  3. Further, go to Apple’s official firmware site to cross-check if your AirPods is running the latest update.

8. Reset your AirPods

If none of the above solutions worked for you, you may need to reset your AirPods and make them like new ones.

Resetting will delete all the tap/touch customizations you’ve made, so it will be as if you’re setting up the AirPods for the first time.

Also, if you face issues related to the connection between AirPods and Mac, try closing the case lid and reconnecting again. Or if this fails:

On your Mac: Click the Bluetooth icon on the status bar → Open Bluetooth Preferences or Settings → Right-click on your AirPods nameDisconnect. Now, hold the setup button on your AirPods case and pair it again.

Wrapping up…

Did any of these solutions work for you? Let us know in the comments below. Have any other Apple related questions? Ask away and we’ll do our best to answer!

  • Changing AirPods settings can a big difference in your listening experience.
  • You can easily rename your AirPods and AirPods Pro, choose which AirPod acts as the microphone, disable features like Automatic Ear Detection or Live Listen, and do so much more.

Apple hit a home run with its strategy of omitting the headphone jack and the introduction of AirPods simultaneously. The AirPods grew into a multi-million-dollar revenue-generating stream for Apple. And that is because AirPods are a quintessence of convenience.

The hassle of a wire is eliminated without losing functionality. You can tap on the AirPods to answer calls and double-tap to skip tracks. Additionally, you also get the choice to tweak these settings. Read along to learn how to change the settings of your AirPods and AirPods Pro through iPhone or iPad.

  1. How to access AirPods settings on iPhone
  2. Rename your AirPods and AirPods Pro
  3. Set one AirPod as the active microphone
  4. Turn off Automatic Ear Detection on AirPods or AirPods Pro
  5. Enable Live Listen on AirPods or AirPods Pro
  6. Change double-tap actions on AirPods
  7. Change press-and-hold actions on AirPods Pro
  8. Enable Spatial Audio on AirPods Pro and AirPods Max
  9. Accessibility settings for AirPods
  10. Enable Noise Cancellation with one AirPod
  11. Change Digital Crown rotation direction on AirPods Max
  12. Set noise control button cycle on AirPods Max

How to access AirPods settings on iPhone

With iOS 17, navigating to AirPods or AirPods Pro settings is a piece of cake.

  1. Open Settings on your iPhone.
  2. Select the option displaying the connected AirPods Pro just below your Apple ID.

Navigate to the AirPods settings for iOS 16

Rename your AirPods and AirPods Pro

  1. Go to SettingsBluetooth.
  2. Tap the Name option.
  3. Rename your AirPods → Tap Done.

    Rename your AirPods

If you’re facing an issue where you can’t rename your AirPods from X’s AirPods to just AirPods, we have an article that will help resolve this issue.

Set one AirPod as the active microphone

You can choose which AirPod microphone works as an audio input source, left or right. Just follow the steps below:

  1. Navigate to AirPods Settings.
  2. Scroll down and tap Microphone.
  3. Select from the three available options. (I recommend you keep this setting to Automatically Switch AirPods)

Choose which microphone is used by AirPods

Note: AirPods Max is the only device from the current AirPods lineup that doesn’t support this setting.

Turn off Automatic Ear Detection on AirPods or AirPods Pro

The AirPods automatically pause playing media whenever you take them out of your ears. If this setting is not enabled for you or you want to disable this option, read along.

  1. Navigate to AirPods Settings.
  2. Turn On or Off the Automatic Ear/Head Detection toggle as per your needs.

Enable Disable Automatic Ear Head Detection on AirPods

Enable Live Listen on AirPods or AirPods Pro

Live listen allows users to listen to audio captured by their iPhone’s microphones. For example, you can leave your iPhone in a room and listen to the conversation of the people in the room directly on your AirPods. The only condition is you need to be within the Bluetooth range.

People can use the Live Listen feature for several reasons, and I recommend not using this feature to spy on people. With that said, here’s a step-by-step guide to help you enable Live Listen on your AirPods.

Change double-tap actions on AirPods (1st and 2nd generation)

  1. Navigate to AirPods Settings.
  2. Tap the Left/Right option under the DOUBLE TAP AIRPOD section.
  3. You can select from Siri, Play/Pause, Next Track, Previous Track, or Turn off the double tap action.

Change Double Tap actions on AirPods

Change press-and-hold actions on AirPods Pro

While you cannot change the single, double, or triple tap gestures for AirPods Pro (1st and 2nd generation) and AirPods (3rd generation), you can certainly change the press and hold actions. Here’s how to do it:

  1. Navigate to AirPods Settings.
  2. Select Left/Right under the Press and Hold AirPods option.
  3. You can select each of the AirPods to activate Siri or Cycle between the Noise Control modes

     Change Press-and-Hold actions of AirPods

Note: AirPods Pro and AirPods 3 share the same stem design, but AirPods 3 doesn’t sport ANC. So, the noise control mode is only available on AirPods Pro; you can use the steps above to switch between Active Noise Cancellation, and Transparency mode and to turn them off.

Enable Spatial Audio on AirPods Pro and AirPods Max

Before we proceed, ensure to enable Spatial Audio with Dolby Atmos on Apple Music.

  1. Navigate to AirPods Settings.
  2. Select Spatial Audio.
  3. On the next screen, select the Spatial Audio option.
  4. Tap Done

Enable Spatial Audio in iOS 15

Here’s how you can set up Personalized Spatial Audio from an iPhone running iOS 16 or later:

  1. Navigate to AirPods Settings.
  2. Select Personalized Spatial Audio under the Spatial Audio option.
  3. Tap Set Up Personalized Spatial Audio.
  4. Read the details and tap Continue.
  5. Follow the on-screen instructions to set up the feature.

Enable Spatial Audio in iOS 16

*Spatial Audio is available on AirPods Pro, AirPods Pro (2nd generation), AirPods (3rd generation), and AirPods Max.

Accessibility settings for AirPods

Apple has merged the AirPods accessibility settings within the dedicated AirPods section. Hence, you no longer need to go into Accessibility settings to access and change some of the AirPods settings like Press Speed, Press Duration, etc. Here’s how to change the available settings:

  1. Open Settings on iPhone.
  2. Navigate to AirPods Settings.
  3. Scroll down and select Accessibility.
  4. Now, you can adjust the speed required for the duration of the Press Speed. The available options are Default, Slower, and Slowest.
  5. You can also adjust the Press and Hold duration. The available options are Default, Shorter, and Shortest.
  6. Since the AirPods Pro 2nd generation supports gesture controls to adjust the volume, you can also change the waiting time between each swipe. The available options are Default, Longer, and Longest.

    Accessibility settings for AirPods

Note: This setting is not available on AirPods (1st and 2nd generation).

Enable Noise Cancellation with one AirPod

The Active Noise Cancellation on AirPods Pro is unmatched, and the AirPods Pro 2nd generation takes this to the next level. However, ANC was just available when you’re wearing both the AirPods. That changes now, and you can use the Active Noise Cancellation present on the AirPods Pro series even while wearing just one AirPod. Follow the steps below to enable it.

  1. Open Settings on iPhone.
  2. Navigate to AirPods Settings.
  3. Scroll down and select Accessibility
  4. Toggle on the Noise Cancellation with one AirPod option under Noise Control.

Enable Noise Cancellation with one AirPod

AirPods Max needs no introduction. They’re a solid pair of headphones with Apple’s ecosystem convenience and amazing sound quality. While they have some flaws, the Transparency mode on the AirPods Max is one of the best in the Headphone market. Here are some settings you can change on the AirPods Max.

Change Digital Crown rotation direction on AirPods Max

Rotating the Digital Crown on the AirPods Max helps increase or decrease the volume depending on the movement of the rotation. If you’d like to invert the default rotation, read along.

  1. Navigate to AirPods Settings.
  2. Tap Digital Crown.
  3. Under Increase Volume By Rotating, select Back to Front or Front to Back, according to your preference.

Change the Digital Crown rotation direction

Set noise control button cycle on AirPods Max

Like I already said, the AirPods Max features one of the best Active Noise Cancellation and Transparency modes. The button on the right headphone module helps you switch between the three settings.

  1. Navigate to AirPods Settings.
  2. Under the Button Cycle Between option, select from the three options, and the button will cycle between the selected options.

    Set Noise Control Button Cycle

I hope this guide helped solve your queries regarding the AirPods. By the way, do you think AirPods have the best sound quality in their respective price range? Let me know in the comments below.

AirPods are a great way to explore your favorite music, attend your calls, and look uber stylish. But if your AirPods have been acting up recently, then the most common solution is to reset and return AirPods to factory default settings. In doing so, you also reset the glitch that might be creating the issue.

The process to reset Apple AirPods or AirPods Pro is quite simple; majorly because you don’t have to worry about data back-up or any other jazz that you have to go through while resetting your Mac or iPhone. So without any further ado, let’s start.

How to reset AirPods and AirPods Pro

The steps to reset all the Airpods, except Airpods Max, are the same. If you are looking for the steps to reset AirPods Max, we have already covered it in a different article; check it out.

  1. Put your AirPods back into their charging case.
  2. Wait for 30 seconds.
  3. After that, open the lid of the charging case.
  4. Open Settings on the connected iPhone, iPad, or iPod.
  5. Tap Bluetooth.
  6. Now, tap the i button.

tap the i button to forget AirPods
  7. Select Forget This Device.
  8. Now, Tap again to confirm.

tap forget device to remove AirPods
  9. Next, press and hold the setup button on the back of the case while the lid is open.
Do it until the status light flashes amber, then white.

For the AirPods‌ case that only supports wired charging, the status light will be inside the case between the ‌AirPods‌. For AirPods that support wireless charging, the status light will be on the front of the case.

Note: If you perform the steps with a closed lid, only your iPhone will forget your AirPods. To reset all the AirPods settings, you must perform the steps while keeping its lid open.

After resetting, if you have doubts about reconnecting AirPods with your Apple devices, we have already covered that for you.

How to factory reset AirPods and AirPods Pro without an iPhone

Even if you don’t have an iPhone, you can still reset your AirPods and AirPods Pro without any issues. All you have to do is:

  1. Put your AirPods back into their charging case without closing the lid.
  2. Press and hold the setup button until the status light change from flashing amber to white.
  3. Now, you can close the lid as the AirPods are fully reset.

How to remove AirPods from Apple ID

Even if you reset the AirPods and try to connect it with an iPhone linked to a different Apple ID, you may be informed that the device is linked with another ID. To remove AirPods from Apple ID, all you have to do is:

  1. Open the Find My app on your iPhone.
  2. Swipe up the Devices section.
  3. Tap the AirPods you want to remove.
  4. Now, tap/swipe Remove This Device.
If you swipe, tap the bin icon.
  5. Next, tap Remove again to confirm.

What to do when AirPods won’t reset

Yeah, sometimes things don’t go as expected. That’s life, and the only thing we can do is find solutions to our problems. So here’s what you need to do if your AirPods won’t reset even after following these methods.

  • Clean Airpods: If the AirPods and their case are not clean enough, they may not properly connect with the case and affect the reset process. So, don’t forget to clean your AirPods. You can also check out our list of best AirPods cleaning kits to ensure your AirPods receives the best cleaning.
  • Contact Apple Support:  Even after cleaning your AirPods, if it’s not resetting, you better contact Apple Support as soon as possible since they can help you better.
Can Reset AirPods be tracked?

Nope. Once you reset AirPods, it cannot be tracked. So if your AirPods get stolen, you need to use Find My to locate it quickly before the thief resets it.

How do I remove AirPods from someone else’s iCloud?

You must get the other person’s iPhone and remove it from the Find My app. Follow the steps mentioned above to do so.

Why are my AirPods not connecting?

Put the AirPods back into the charging case and check if it charges. If it does, then you can proceed with resetting your AirPods and see if that fixes the connectivity issues.

That’s it!

Troubles with your Airpods, just reset and move on; trouble with your iPhone or iPad, just reset and move on. Only if this could also be the solution to all our problems could be the same, just reset and move on. Though, in retrospect, reset is not always the solution, sometimes you have to trust an Apple support professional to solve the issue. Key Takeaways

  • If you own AirPods Pro 2, you can find the AirPods case even without the AirPods inside – thanks to U1 technology and Precision Finding.
  • To find AirPods Pro 2 case: Launch the Find My app on iPhone > Go to Devices > Choose your AirPods > Case > Select either Play Sound or Find.
  • If you have any other AirPods, you can attach an AirTag to the case and locate the same in Find My.

The other day, I plugged in my AirPods and went out for a jog, leaving the AirPods case behind. On returning, I couldn’t find the charging case and started looking for it everywhere. Eventually, I figured out there’s a way to find the AirPods case even without the AirPods inside, but there’s a catch.

If you’ve been through something similar and need a solution, you’re in the right place. In this article, I’ll explain everything you need to know about finding an AirPods case, even if it is separated from the AirPods stems.

Can I find my AirPods case without AirPods in it?

As of writing, only the AirPods Pro (2nd gen) facilitates a search for the case, even when the AirPods are not in it. This particular AirPods case has U1 technology that uses Precision Finding to locate it in the Find My app.

To track any other AirPods case, you need at least one bud inside the case. So, you might wonder if there’s a workaround you can use. The good news is – yes, there is!

As a workaround, you can track any AirPods case after attaching an AirTag to it. I suggest you read our article on how to use AirTags to find your belongings in case you’re unfamiliar with this procedure.

And if you are the lucky one with an AirPods Pro 2, keep reading to find your lost charging case!

How to find AirPods case using Find My on iPhone

Please note that even with the hardware support on AirPods Pro 2, you need to ensure you have added the device to your Find My list. The steps below are of help only if you have done that before losing your charging case.

  1. Launch the Find My app on your paired iPhone.
  2. Navigate to the Devices section.
  3. Identify and choose your AirPods from the list.
If you have attached an AirTag to the case, you may pick that.
  4. Tap the option labeled Case.
  5. At this point, you can select one of the following actions:
    • Play Sound – Plays a mild, alarming sound.
    • Find – Provides you an idea of how far or close the device is.

Find AirPod Case with Find My
  6. Moreover, if needed, you also have the option to mark the device as lost by tapping the Activate button next to Mark As Lost.

That’s about it!

Can I purchase a replacement AirPods case if mine is lost?

Yes, you can buy an AirPods case replacement directly from Apple or from licensed retailers. Before buying a replacement AirPods case, be sure to confirm compatibility with your specific model.

Is it possible to use the Find My app to track the AirPods case if it’s out of battery?

The Find My app might not be able to locate your AirPods case if it is completely dead. For the app to detect the case’s location, the latter needs to have enough juice left in it.

Can I track the AirPods case using the serial number or IMEI?

Currently, Apple does not provide a specific tracking service based on the serial number or IMEI of the AirPods case.

Track your AirPods!

In addition to the methods mentioned earlier, I suggest you take a moment to go back in your mind and remember where you last had or saw your AirPods case. It could also be useful to check familiar places like your pockets, bags, or nearby surfaces where you might have accidentally left them.

Fake AirPods are becoming rampant in the market. They are very similar in appearance to the real ones, making identifying challenging. Don’t worry; I am here to help. If you are not buying AirPods from the official Apple store, learn how to spot fake AirPods Pro and ensure you’re not fooled.

Why should you spot fake AirPods Pro?

Nowadays, fake AirPods models on the market are no different in quality and appearance. But ultimately, they are just a cheap knock-off. You will neither get the authentic feel nor experience the luxury and performance of an Apple product.

Dummy AirPods are made with inferior materials and don’t last long as genuine ones. The sound quality is also not good, and they often have connection issues. Additionally, fake AirPods will never get any software updates over time.

Last but not least, they can also be hazardous to your health as they may contain toxin materials. Knowing how to spot fake AirPods can save you from being dupped and keep you from getting stuck with low-quality products. Therefore, let’s understand how to tell if AirPods Pro are real.

1. Identify fake AirPods via iOS devices

The latest updates of iOS 16 and newer models of AirPods Pro have made it easier to rectify the originals from the fake ones.

  • “Whenever you connect a fake AirPods Pro to your device, you will encounter a pop-up stating,””Cannot Verify AirPods.” On the contrary, connecting to a real AirPod Pro is seamless.
  • There is a high difference in the performance duration. The fakes tend to lose their battery life much quicker than the real ones.
  • If you’re still unable to tell if AirPods are fake, use Find My to locate your AirPods. This method is limited explicitly to official product ranges. Hence, it will not suffice for a copycat.

2. Verify Memoji engraving

There is a unique trick if you’re used to ordering AirPods online. Apple offers a sleek customization feature on AirPods cases which is absent from a counterfeit.

Memoji engraving Airpods Pro

You can request to engrave a memoji, text, or emoji of your choice on AirPods Pro before purchasing. An engraved AirPod stands out from the fake ones, and there is a low possibility for third-party websites to offer customization on fake AirPods.

3. Check serial number

Serial numbers are unique identifiers for every product. So, it is the easiest way to identify whether the particular AirPods set is registered in the Apple directory. You must enter the serial number on Apple’s official Check Device Coverage website.

There are several ways to check the serial number of the AirPod you’re using. The first and the easiest is via Bluetooth Settings.

  1. Launch Settings → Navigate to Bluetooth.
  2. Tap the info icon beside the connected AirPods.
  3. Check the serial number.

Check the serial number to spot fake AirPods Pro
  • Check your AirPods case: The AirPod case also has serial numbers on the surface in a slightly grayed font. It’s faded to some level, so remember to observe it carefully. It can be a strong distinguisher for real AirPods since some fakes miss these minute details. Verify it from the official website, even if a serial number is present.
  • Locate on box: The packaging of AirPods also covers a ton of details outside the lid. Locate a set of stickers on the box, and you can find the serial number right above the product barcode.
  • Under ear cushion: Check your AirPods’ right piece to get the serial number. If you’re using AirPods Max, remove the magnetic cushion from the left side of the headphones. You can notice the serial number engraved there.

4. Observe price difference between real and fake AirPods

If you buy AirPods for a lower price, it’s most likely fake. The temptation of getting things for cheaper brings to everyone. However, it carries its own set of risks. The prices of AirPods vary for different models. While you may get older models with good discounts, the latest ones are pricey.

So, it’s viable to make purchases from official retailers of Apple so that you’re not prone to such scams. Be cautious when purchasing AirPods Pro from third-party sellers or unauthorized retailers, as they may sell fake products in the name of offers.

5. Spot fake AirPods via packaging

No matter the scammers’ perfection, it is impossible to completely replicate the original AirPods. So, you must carefully observe the packaging for the most minor mistakes.

  • Check for misspellings and wrong information: Take a close look at the box and try to find spelling mistakes, misprints, or unusual information. It may sound absurd, but there may be many grammatical errors in the box itself. If you locate it, report it to your third-party seller, as there is a high probability of fake AirPods.
  • Box contents and logo: If you buy an original AirPods, you’ll receive a Warranty Card, Safety Sheet, and a Manual in the box. However, a few counterfeits only stuff the box with a manual. Therefore, cross-verify it before making a purchase. If you find any contents missing from the box, you can tell if AirPods are fake.
  • Font and color consistency: Look at the manual if you ever lay a hand on fake AirPods. You’ll notice that the font is somewhat brighter than what Apple provides. It may seem perfect at first glance, but the more you notice, you’ll realize some minute alterations are made.

6. Test and observe quality

Let’s assume that everything on the packaging is perfect to a certain level and seems original. But even if you miss out on details of the box, there are still ways to tell if AirPod Pros are real.

Check the diffuser

  • The diffuser is the elongated line preset against the circular IR sensor. The position of the diffuser line should be aligned with the sensor.
  • The grills in the original AirPod Pro will not feature a boundary around the diffusers.
  • Furthermore, the grills in a fake AirPod are well-polished, which is not the case in a real one.

Check the bottom of AirPods

You can also have a look at the base of the AirPods. These magnet-enabled sections are designated for making contact with the case while charging. If your AirPod is fake, it’ll have an oval-shaped area covering more than half of the base. This area is equally allocated to the authentic product.

Check inscriptions

Check L and R inscriptions to spot fake AirPods Pro

The AirPods must have the symbols L and R engraved on the earpieces. So, if it’s not present, this is the sign of a dummy. Even if the inscriptions are visible, try to scratch those mildly. If it’s hard to remove, then the AirPod is original.

Check the charging case

Check wireless charging case to spot difference between real and fake AirPods Pro
  • The charging port of AirPods is lined up with metal plates. The genuine case will have a thin lining. Meanwhile, the sham case will have a comparatively thick line.
  • AirPods Pro and AirPods 2 also support wireless charging, which is obviously missing in the unoriginal AirPods.
  • Next, look for the depth on the flip of the case. The fake AirPods have somewhat profound depth on the flip.
  • A few models surfing the market have “Assembled in China” engraved on the rear surface instead of “Designed by Apple in California.” This states that the piece you’re holding in hand is far from the original.

Color

All factors are kept aside; color is the most common differentiation in AirPods Pro. Ever since its launch, Apple has only released AirPods in white color. If you get your hands on any piece with a different color, it must be fake.

Sensors

Check Sensor to spot fake AirPods Pro

The sensors are among the most significant differences between real and fake AirPods Pro.

Real AirPods Pro have sensors that detect when they are inside the ear, pause or play the audio, or are put back in the case. They also have a force sensor on the stem that allows you to control playback, answer calls, and activate Siri.

In contrast, fake AirPods Pro lacks these sensors and has a button instead of a force sensor.

Design differences

Apple is known to be very keen and accurate with its products. Each one of their AirPods is so detailed that nobody can tell the difference. The earpieces are oval in shape, whereas you’ll find circular earpieces in fake AirPods Pro.

Save yourself from fake AirPods Pro, buy from trusted websites!!!

While there are several points like sound quality, but sometimes it’s difficult to understand the difference if you have never heard what AirPods sound quality is like. Hence, I covered only the most surefire ways to help you tell fake AirPods Pro from the real ones.

Besides, I recommend buying expensive devices from the trusted sellers like Amazon or the Apple Store itself. Saving a few bucks can prove pretty expensive here.

Key Takeaways
  • To find the model number of your AirPods, go to iPhone Settings > Select Bluetooth > Tap the info (i) icon. Here, in the About section, you’ll find the Model Name, Model Number, and Serial Number.
  • Alternatively, you can find the model number on: the underside of the stem for AirPods and AirPods Pro and the left cushion for AirPods Max.

It’s pretty easy to spot a pair of AirPods from other wireless earbuds out on the market. But identifying just which AirPods model you have can be pretty challenging.

Identifying AirPods models and AirPods generations can come in handy, especially if you plan to buy one from a third-party seller or a friend. Below, I’ll guide you through different ways to identify your AirPods model.

How do you know which AirPods you have?

1. Check AirPods in iPhone Settings

If it’s your AirPods you’re curious about, you can simply look into your device’s settings to see its model number. You can do this even if it’s not currently connected to your device, as long as they’re paired.

  1. Head to Settings → Bluetooth.
  2. Tap the info (i) button. You’ll see the Model Name, Model Number, and even your device’s Serial Number.

    AirPods in Bluetoth-Settings on iPhone

Alternatively, if your AirPods is currently connected to your Apple device, you can do the following:

  1. Go to Settings → [your name] ’s [AirPods model].
  2. Scroll all the way down to see your AirPods’ model name, model number, and serial number.

    AirPods details in iPhone Settings

2. Identify your AirPods model number and generation

From iPhone Settings, you can go to Model Name and easily find which category of AirPods you have – AirPods, AirPods Pro, or AirPods Max.

The real challenge comes in identifying which generation of AirPods you have. You can identify it with the help of their model number – which can also be found below Model Name in iPhone Settings.

Below is a complete list of all the types of AirPods manufactured, along with their model numbers:

AirPods GenerationsAirPods Models
AirPods (1st generation)A1523, A1722
AirPods (2nd generation)A2032, A2031
AirPods (3rd generation)A2565, A2564
AirPods MaxA2096
AirPods ProA2084, A2083
AirPods Pro (2nd generation) (Lightning)A2931, A2699, A2698
AirPods Pro (2nd generation) (USB-C)A3047, A3048, A3049

3. Check the AirPods design

For basic clarity, the fastest way to identify what AirPods you have is to check their appearance.

AirPods has three different lineups – AirPods, AirPods Pro, and AirPods Max. Each of these products has its own unique design that tells them apart.

AirPods 3rd gen, AirPods Pro, AirPods Max images
Source: Apple
  • The regular AirPods looks like Apple’s earbuds, sans the wires—it comes with a plastic, non-replaceable tip.
  • This contrasts with AirPods Pro, which comes with different-sized silicone ear tips.
  • The AirPods Max is the easiest to spot because it’s the only over-ear headphones in the lineup.

4. Find model number printed on the AirPods

Model Number Printed on an AirPods

If you have the AirPods stems with you, the fastest way to know your model number is to look for them on the units themselves.

  • AirPods or AirPods Pro: They’re on the first line of the printed text underside of each stem.
  • AirPods Max: In the case of AirPods Max, you can find it printed underneath the left cushion

Let’s assume you don’t have your AirPods, or they’re still sealed. So, if you have the box with you, you should also find the model number of the AirPods as well as the charging case printed on the box just above the first barcode.

5. Compare AirPods features

Each AirPods model offers its users different capabilities. For example, if you’re using AirPods and can use Spatial Audio, then you’re using the third generation.

If you own an AirPods Pro and want to see whether it’s the first or second generation based on features, check its noise-canceling capabilities. The latter touts to cancel up to twice the noise as its predecessor.

We’ve written a more comprehensive comparison of AirPods Pro and AirPods Pro (2nd generation) if you’re interested in how AirPods 2 fares against the AirPods’ latest model. Here’s also a comparison between AirPods Pro and AirPods 3.

6. Identify your AirPods charging case

AirPods Pro Generation Charging Case

AirPods Pro 2nd Gen

Model and serial numbers aren’t limited to the AirPods, but even their charging cases. Not only that, but the design of each generation of charging case has subtle differences that you can use as a hint.

Here are the model numbers for each of the charging cases:

  • Lightning charging case AirPods (1st Generation): A1602
  • Wireless charging case AirPods (2nd generation): A1938
  • AirPods Pro charging case: A2190
  • MagSafe charging case for AirPods Pro: A2190
  • MagSafe charging case for AirPods (3rd generation): A2566
  • Lightning charging case AirPods (3rd generation): A2897
  • MagSafe charging case for AirPods Pro (2nd Generation) (Lightning): A2700
  • MagSafe charging case for AirPods Pro (2nd Generation) (USB-C): A2968

The model numbers on AirPods cases can be found written at the bottom of the case.

Each also has design details that are distinct from the others. The first and second-generation charging cases for AirPods are taller than they are long. Meanwhile, the AirPods Pro cases are longer than they are tall.

You can also distinguish if the first and second-generation AirPods case allows for wireless charging or not. Just check for the status light. Non-wireless charging cases do not have an LED status light.

As for the AirPods Pro, you’ll need to rely on the serial number. If your AirPods Pro charging cases have serial numbers ending in 1NRC or 1059, they’re MagSafe-ready. If they end in either LKKT or 0C6L, they’re not capable of wireless charging.

For the charging case for AirPods 3, you’d have to rely on the model numbers solely. MagSafe-ready cases have the model number A2700, while non-wireless charging cases have the model number A2897.

The AirPods Pro (2nd generation) is unique in that it has a speaker with a loop to which you can attach a lanyard, and there are also two versions of this generation’s case. Both are capable of MagSafe charging, but one can also be connected via a USB-C cable and the other using a Lightning cable.

7. Use your AirPods serial number to identify AirPods’ model

Similar to other Apple products, you can use your AirPods serial number to find out the model of the AirPods you have.

Just head to Apple’s coverage page → Enter your serial number, and voila! Your AirPods model should be shown there.

There are easy ways to find your AirPods serial number.

  • Regardless of the model, the serial numbers of all AirPods are located on the underside of the lid.
  • You can also find it on the box the unit came with or the original invoice that came with your purchase.
  • While the AirPods have serial numbers, each AirPod has a different serial number that isn’t identical to the serial number on the box or the one registered to your AirPods.
  • As mentioned above, you can also check it through the Apple device your AirPods are paired with. To do so, just go to Settings → Bluetooth → tap the info (i) button. Your AirPods’ Serial Number should be indicated here.

Wrapping up…

All AirPods seem similar, but they have distinct features that let you tell them apart. If your eyes can’t catch these subtleties, you can always check the model of your AirPods using their model or serial numbers.

I hope this article has helped you identify which AirPods model you have. Which method did you use? Share it below!
