Apple switched to the HEIC file format on iPhones and iPads to allow for high-quality photos with smaller file sizes than typical JPG images. However, not all devices or platforms support the HEIC format, leading to compatibility issues. Fortunately, converting HEIC photos to JPG is pretty straightforward.

In this detailed guide, I’ll explain what HEIC format is and how you can convert HEIC to JPG on iPhone, Mac, and Windows PC.

What is HEIC format?

HEIC stands for High Efficiency Image Container, a file format adopted by Apple for storing images and image sequences. The format is known for its high compression efficiency, which allows captured photos to have smaller file sizes without any reduction in image quality.

With iOS 11, Apple introduced HEIC as the default file format for photos clicked with the iPhone or iPad camera. This allows users to store more number of images in the limited free storage space they get.

While this new file format has its benefits, JPG or JPEG (interchangeable file extensions) continues to be the universal standard. So, if you were wondering how you can convert HEIC photos to JPG, here’s all you need to do:

How to convert HEIC to JPG on iPhone or iPad

  1. Open the Photos app → Go to LibrarySelect the photos you want to convert.
  2. Next, tap the Share button at the bottom left → Choose Copy Photo(s) from the pop-up menu.

    Copy photo from photos app
  3. Then close the Photos app and launch the Files app.
  4. Here, create a New Folder or head to an existing folder.
  5. Long press any empty space in the folder until a pop-up menu appears.
  6. Finally, tap Paste in the pop-up menu.

    Paste photo in files app

As soon as you hit Paste, all the HEIC photos you copied will automatically convert to JPEG and be available in the Files app.

While converting HEIC photos to JPEG on iPhone is fairly easy, selecting and copy-pasting each photo can sometimes get overwhelming. In that case, you can head to the Camera app settings and change the format in which the Camera app captures the shots.

How to take JPEG photos on iPhone instead of HEIC

  1. Open the Settings app → Head to Camera settings.
  2. Next, locate and tap on Formats.
  3. Select Most Compatible from the available options.

Select most compatible formats in camera settings

Now, every time you capture an image using your iPhone’s Camera app, the resulting photo will be in JPEG format.

Automatically convert HEIC photos to JPEG while transferring to Mac

When you select Most Compatible as the format on iPhone, the size of the images clicked will increase.

If you are not in favor of this storage issue, instead of changing the iPhone’s image format, you can set the HEIC photos to automatically convert to JPEG when exported to a Mac or Windows PC. To do this:

  1. Open Settings → Navigate to Photos settings.
  2. Next, scroll down to the bottom and select Automatic under the Transfer to Mac or PC section.

Select Automatic for transfer to mac or pc in photos settings

How to convert HEIC to JPG on Mac

Selecting the Automatic format in Photos settings will apply to all the images you transfer to your Mac or PC from here on.

However, you still need to convert the HEIC photos already saved on your Mac manually.

  1. Launch Finder on your Mac.
  2. Select the photos you want to change the file format of and control-click on the selection.
  3. From the pop-up that appears, select Quick ActionsConvert Image.

    Convert image from quick actions
  4. Next, click the drop-down menu next to Format → Select JPEG.

Choose JPEG to convert photo into JPEG
  5. After that, click on the Convert to JPEG button.
    Select convert to JPEG

This will create a duplicate of the selected image in JPG format.

How to convert HEIC to JPG on Windows 11

Now that you know how to convert HEIC to JPG on a Mac, it’s important to know how to do the same on Windows if you don’t own a Mac.

  1. Open the HEIC image you want to convert to JPEG using a supported photo app.
  2. Next, click the Three Dots button at the top center and choose Save As.

Save As to save the image
  3. Click the drop-down button next to Save File as field and select JPEG.

Select jpeg to save image in jpeg format on Windows
  4. Finally, click on the Save button.

    Save JPEG image on Windows

Conclusion

And that’s it; this is all you need to know about how to convert HEIC photos to JPG on iPhone, iPad, Mac or Windows PC. Remember that keeping the Camera app format to High Efficiency is the best option to save space on your iPhone without compromising the image quality.

The Find My option on your iPhone, iPad, and Mac is incredibly useful for locating your device when it gets misplaced, lost, or stolen. It lets you view your device’s location, remotely lock it, or erase the data, and more. Therefore it’s highly recommended that you always use Find My on your Apple devices. However, in some instances, you might want to disable it. So, let’s learn more about how to turn off Find My on iPhone, iPad, and Mac.

Why Do I Need to Turn Off Find My?

There are a few different reasons why you might need to disable Find My on an iPhone, iPad, or Mac. For instance, it is recommended that you do this before selling your device or passing it on to a new owner.

You might want to deactivate Find My iPhone or Find My Mac because it can allow someone to track you. This is because anyone who knows your Apple ID log on details can use the Find My feature to locate the devices that you’re logged into.

What Happens When You Disable Find My?

If you disable Find My on your iOS or Mac, it will become nearly impossible to trace or recover your device if it is lost or stolen. Find My helps you locate your phone by viewing it on a map, playing a sound on it, remotely wiping the data, locking it, etc. It also includes Activation Lock that prevents others from using your device.

So, turning off the Find My feature will eliminate these options, and it won’t be easy to find your device. Of course, if you’re selling or giving away your iPhone, iPad, or Mac, you should disable the Find My feature. Along with turning off this feature, you can also add or remove devices from Find My.

How to Turn Off Find My iPhone

  1. Open the Settings app.
  2. Tap on your name and then tap on Find My.
  3. Tap on Find My iPhone ( On an iPad, tap “Find My iPad”).Tap on Profile in iPhone Settings and Tap on Find My and Then Tap on Find My iPhone
  4. Toggle OFF Find My Phone.
  5. Enter your Apple ID password and tap on Turn Off.Turn Off Find My iPhone

How to Turn Off Find My Mac

  1. Open System Settings.

Click on the Apple Logo and select System Settings on Mac
  2. Click on Apple ID → Go to iCloud.

Select Apple ID and go to iCloud
  3. Head to the Apps Using iCloud section → Click Show More Apps.

Show more apps under apps using icloud
  4. Now, select Find My Mac under the list of More Apps Using iCloud.

If you’re prone to leaving your MAc unattended, then one of the simplest and easiest ways to secure your Mac is by enabling a lock screen. In this article, I will discuss six ways to lock the screen of your Mac to keep your data safe and secure when you are away from it.

  1. Keyboard shortcuts to lock the Mac screen
  2. How to lock the Mac screen from the Apple Menu
  3. How to lock your Mac screen automatically
  4. How to use Fast User Switching to lock the Mac screen
  5. How to use Hot Corners to lock the screen of your Mac

How to lock your Mac screen

Setting up the Hot Corners is my favorite and easiest way to lock the screen of my Mac. However, all methods are easy to use, and you can choose any of them and will work on whatever Mac model you have.

1. Keyboard shortcuts to lock the Mac screen

If your Mac is equipped with the latest macOS version, use the CMD + Control + Q key combination to summon the lock screen instantly. Alternatively, press the Touch ID button to turn off the screen.

However, if you’re operating an older version of Mac, the Control + Shift + Power button is your go-to key combination for locking the screen. Finally, for those using a Mac with an optical drive, press the Control + Shift + Eject button to turn off the active screen.

These shortcut keys are the easiest way to lock the screen of your Mac and maintain solitude.

2. How to lock the Mac screen from the Apple Menu

  1. Click the Apple logo () on the menu bar.
  2. Select Lock Screen.

click apple logo and select lock screen on mac

Alternatively, press the Sleep option to shut off the eyes of your Mac when you are not using it. Things even get better as you can use your Apple Watch to turn on your Mac, giving you an advanced edge of accessibility.

3. How to lock your Mac screen automatically

Setting up automatic screen locking is the best way to guarantee your Mac is secure. When you are not using it for a specific time limit, the display will be locked. So intruders can’t access your unattended device.

  1. Click the Apple logo () and open System Settings.

Click apple logo and select system settings
  2. Click Lock Screen from the left side.
  3. Select the drop-down next to Start Screen Saver when inactive and choose a time limit.

Beside Require password after screen saver begins or display is turned off and select Immediately
  5. Enter your Mac password → Hit Modify Settings.

Enter Mac password and Hit Modify Settings

4. How to use Fast User Switching to lock the Mac screen

I prefer this Fast User Switching method for locking a Mac screen because it offers decent animation. If you want something different, follow the steps outlined below.

  1. Go to System Settings.
  2. Access Control Centre → Select Fast User Switching.

Access control centre, fast user switching in system settings
  3. Now, click the drop-down menu next to Show in the Menu Bar.
    I chose icon here.

Select the position of user switching in settings
  4. Head over to the menu bar and click the user profile icon.

Access user control, and choose login window

5. How to use Hot Corners to lock the screen of your Mac

Hot Corners are another intriguing way of effortlessly locking your Mac’s screen. This low-key yet excellent macOS feature is definitely something you should try at least once.

  1. Go to System Settings.
  2. Select Desktop & Dock → Hot Corners.

Select Desktop and Dock and then select Hot Corners
  3. Choose any corner → Select Lock Screen → Click Done.

Select Lock Screen in any corner and Tap Done

6. How to lock the Mac screen via Terminal

If you are a techie, you can use the Terminal to send your Mac to sleep and lock the screen. Here’s how to do it:

  1. Open Terminal via Spotlight Search.

Open Terminal from Launchpad on Mac
  2. Type pmset displaysleepnow command and press Return.

Type command and press return on Mac
  3. Now, your Mac will go to sleep, and the password is required to unlock it.

Use a third-party app to lock the Mac screen

Last but not least, if you’re looking for a wide range of controls over the functions of your Mac, then third-party apps like CleanMyMac X are at your service. They will effectively allow you to lock your Mac screen, in addition to many customization options.

Importance of securing your Mac with a lock screen

With the advent of technology, Macs have become a highly prevalent device for professionals. Regardless of your usage, your Mac has all sensitive information stored in one place, which must be protected at every cost.

If you are concerned about such security factors, a password-protected lock screen answers all your problems. A lock screen adds an extra layer of security, preventing unknown users from accessing your device’s content without your permission.

By limiting physical access to your device, you can ensure that no intruders can access your Mac in your absence. Furthermore, without compromising on boring and dull backgrounds, you can accumulate custom lock screen messages on your Mac’s lock screen.

Is the Mac’s lock screen mode better than a complete shutdown?

If you’re in a hurry or need to step away from your computer momentarily, the lock screen provides a great deal of security. However, for more extended periods of inactivity, properly shut down your MacBook to ensure all programs and processes are closed correctly.

Can I set up a lock screen on my Mac without a password?

No, a password is required to enable a lock screen on your Mac. However, you can use alternative authentication methods such as Touch ID or Apple Watch to unlock your screen.

Will enabling a lock screen on my Mac slow down my computer?

No, enabling a lock screen on your Mac should not have any noticeable impact on your computer’s performance.

Can I use Siri to lock my Mac screen?

No, Siri cannot be used to lock your Mac screen. However, you can use voice commands to activate certain functions, such as launching apps or opening files.

Stop, drop, and secure!

Apple offers a range of options to lock your Mac’s screen. All the methods mentioned can help keep your Mac secure and provide protection from unauthorized access. In the comments below, let me know your favorite way to lock your Mac.

As a Mac user, you are going to spend a significant amount of time on a browser. Whether it is for surfing, shopping, watching videos, booking tickets, or just reading this article – you need a fast, reliable, and secure browser. The crowded market of browser options can confuse you. That’s where my list of the best web browsers for Mac can come in handy.

I have curated this list after considering a wide range of factors, all of which are mentioned below. Give it a read, and then pick a browser that meets your requirements!

How did I decide on the best web browsers for Mac?

My colleagues here at iGeeksBlog are tech experts who are passionate about all things Apple. Despite that, most of them don’t have Safari as their go-to browser.

That led me to ask Safari users about their reasons to stick with it and others about their reasons to pick alternatives such as Firefox, Brave, Chrome, Edge, and so on.

I gathered information from their experience, used about 10 browsers on my MacBook Air M1, and then compiled this list of the 8 best web browsers for Mac in 2024.

What you will see below is a result of countless hours of testing, in-depth research, and years of first-hand experience. Additionally, to prepare the order of the browsers, I took into account various factors such as speed, efficiency, features, privacy, ease of use, appearance, updates, security, and more.

Each browser recommendation caters to a particular type of user. So, you can not only trust this review but also be sure to find a browser that perfectly fits your day-to-day usage.

What are the best web browsers for Mac in 2024?

Enough talking. Let’s start browsing – through my list!

  1. Edge
  2. Safari
  3. Chrome
  4. Firefox
  5. Vivaldi
  6. Brave
  7. Opera
  8. DuckDuckGo

1. Edge – AI integration, low memory consumption, simplicity

Microsoft Edge

This might come as a surprise, but Microsoft had been working silently to improve its browser – Edge. When they were ready, they launched it with a bang. Now, with the ChatGPT and Copilot integration, it is one of the most feature-rich and stable browsers on the market.

This browser has features you didn’t know you needed. For example, I use Edge to generate images using the Image Creator tool – something for which I used to heavily rely on graphic designers. The only caveat is you need to sign in. After that, you can enter your prompt and just watch the magic unfold.

Further, taking inspiration from Chrome, Edge now provides built-in access to other Microsoft tools such as One Drive, Skype, Calendar, Outlook, and more.

Another feature that blew my mind is the Split screen. Yes, you heard it. You can now browse two things simultaneously in the same tab, side by side! You don’t need to switch windows.

Apart from that, you can color code Tab groups and use an advanced reader mode to avoid ads without using any ad-blockers. You can even make the browser read the content aloud.

That’s not all; there is a built-in PDF editor as well. This small place won’t be enough to list down all the features of Edge, but you get the point. The excess of features might confuse some new users, but trust me, once you get used to Edge, it will become your default browser.

It’s safe to say that with an improved browser (Edge) and search engine (Bing), Microsoft is all set to take on the browser market dominated by Google Chrome.

Pros

  • Based on Chromium
  • Integrates ChatGPT features
  • Feature-rich

Cons

  • Might confuse first-time users

2. Safari – Fast, no-nonsense, secure browser for Mac

Safari Browser for Mac

Earlier, many Mac users used Safari to only download another browser. However, that trend is changing. A lot more people prefer Safari. That’s because Apple has made some noticeable improvements to the browser with the recent macOS Sonoma update. In fact, Safari was the most improved app from the update.

You can now create separate Safari profiles for different users, use different search engines for regular and Private browsing, lock Private tabs, disallow websites from tracking you, and more.

All of the above were added to existing unique features such as Tab Groups, the ability to sync website settings, and the likes.

However, Safari’s limited support for extensions might be a huge dealbreaker for some. That being said, if you don’t use a browser for anything beyond normal surfing, shopping, and doing the basics, Safari is the ideal choice.

Pros

  • Sleek design
  • Fast performance
  • Comes with many security and privacy features

Cons

  • Limited support for extensions

This browser comes installed by default on your Mac

3. Chrome – Easy-to-use, access to Google services

Chrome for Mac

I don’t think I need to write a lot about Chrome since it is the go-to option for many and has the largest market share among browsers for Mac and PC. I still remember the day I unboxed my Mac. After booting it up, I launched Safari, downloaded Chrome, and set the latter as my default browser.

Chrome has influenced me so much over the last many years that it is almost unimaginable to even consider a new Mac browser, and there are many reasons for that.

Chrome supports a wide range of extensions, Google services, and now has a dedicated Password Manager. The last one’s my favorite. I don’t use a password manager app anymore. All my login credentials are stored and easily accessible in Chrome. To view my saved passwords, all I need to do is provide my fingerprint.

There’s also a nice little Google feature called Passkeys. It allows me to access my saved history, preferences, and login credentials while using Chrome on any new device!

Unfortunately, Chrome is a hacker’s paradise and has often been the subject of leaked user data. If you are a privacy-conscious person, Chrome is not a good choice. But if you are ready to let Google know your browsing history, you can go ahead with it.

Pro Tip To strengthen your surfing experience on Chrome, you can install the SurfShark VPN extension. It provides enhanced privacy with top-notch encryption and routes your data through a secure server in another location.

Pros

  • Based on Chromium
  • Sync across devices
  • Support for a wide range of extensions

Cons

  • Tracks user data

Download

4. Firefox – Reduced loading time, no trackers

Firefox for Mac

While Firefox’s glory days are history, it is still one of the best web browsers for Mac. Firefox has always been at the forefront of bringing new features, which competitors eventually adapt.

One such feature is the introduction of add-ons to the browser. Another is the new Pocket feature next to the address bar; it lets you save websites for later viewing with just one click.

Further, Firefox is one of the most secure web browsers for Mac if you are fed up with major tech giants trying to track your activities and sell your data. You might be happy to learn that Firefox is managed by an open-source organization with user data protection as a top priority.

Apart from protecting user data, there aren’t many stand-out features that can force users to switch to this browser. Also, some users have complained about the high RAM usage of Firefox.

Pros

  • Easy to use
  • Support for a wide range of ad-ons
  • A lot of privacy-focused features

Cons

  • High RAM usage

Download

5. Vivaldi – Highly customizable, built-in ad blocker, abundant features

Vivaldi Browser for Mac

I liked Vivaldi mainly because of how beautiful it looks. Vivaldi has two primary areas of focus: privacy and customization. You will get granular levels of control over the browsing experience with Vivaldi. While it uses the Chromium engine at the core, it differs from the rest with data protection features.

With Chrome and other browsers, you need an extension to block ads. Vivaldi does it by default. Once you download and launch the browser, you get to choose what you want to block – trackers, ads, or both. You can also import bookmarks, search history, passwords and other preferences to Vivaldi – so that you can start from where you left your previous browser.

Like Opera, Vivaldi has a sidebar that provides various options such as downloads, bookmarks, history, and innovative features. Apart from that, Vivaldi also comes with a built-in Notes feature, which allows you to quickly jot down information and even add screenshots to it without leaving the browser.

There is also support for tab groups and stacking them on two levels in the menu bar. If that’s not enough, Vivaldi also offers further options at the bottom of the page, such as screenshots, a slider-based zoom adjuster, turning off images and videos on a page, and even a comprehensive list of page actions.

We’re not done yet. Vivaldi also comes with a built-in client for Mail, Calendar, Translate, and much more. Like some other feature-rich browsers on this list, the excessive inclusion of features might confuse new users.

Pros

  • Looks beautiful
  • Comes with lots of customization features
  • Based on the Chromium platform

Cons

  • The plethora of features can be confusing

Download

6. Brave – No ads, positive word-of-mouth

Brave Browser for Mac

Brave has gotten decent recognition from the tech community thanks to its similarity to Chrome and other Chromium-based browsers. It comes with inbuilt features such as an ad blocker, anti-tracker tools, and a password manager.

A large part of Brave’s popularity comes from securing the browsing experience for users by not collecting their data. Some might argue that you can get Brave’s features by installing extensions in other browsers. But that’s the whole point – Brave reduces the necessity to install extensions.

Content creators might not like Brave because it blocks ads and reduces their revenue. Also, for a regular user, there’s not much special about Brave apart from the ad-free and crypto experience. It’s a browser designed purely for tech nerds.

Pros

  • Based on Chromium
  • Built-in ad blocker
  • Awards users with rewards for using the browser

Cons

  • Doesn’t have any stand-out features

Download

7. Opera – Fancy UI, free VPN and ad-blocker

Opera Browser for Mac

Like Chrome and Microsoft Edge, Opera browser is built on the famous Chromium platform. As a result, it shares similar features and performance but has a different UI and offers valuable tools.

One of the most prominent features of Opera browser is its sidebar, where you can get shortcuts to various tools and popular apps such as Facebook Messenger, WhatsApp, Telegram, Twitter, and Instagram. There’s also an option to send webpages directly to their iPhone using My Flow.

Additionally, Opera also provides users with privacy tools, such as ad blockers and even a free VPN, that make browsing more secure. Finally, since it is built on the same platform as Chrome, Opera is compatible with all those extensions and themes that are compatible with the former.

In fact, it also has a feature similar to Safari’s Tab groups, with many customization options. However, because of so many features, the browser is a bit cluttered, and not everyone might like it.

Also, most of its app integrations are provided by third-party developers, so chances are your data might get shared.

Pros

  • Built-on Chromium platform
  • Comes with an ad blocker
  • Feature-rich

Cons

  • Cluttered UI

Download

8. DuckDuckGo for Mac – Privacy personified

DuckDuck Go Browser for Mac

Privacy has been at the center of this discussion. So, how can we not talk about DuckDuckGo? Apart from offering a search engine, DDG also has its own browser for Mac! As one might guess, the primary intention of this browser is also to prevent tracking and collection of user data.

It uses the same WebKit engine as Safari but offers a more streamlined experience where users can quickly find the content they want. Users also get additional features such as password management and bookmarks. And when it comes to features, that’s all you get.

You must pay the price of sacrificing features to get privacy and security in the virtual world.

Pros

  • Minimal
  • Based on the same WebKit used by Safari
  • Protects users’ data from trackers

Cons

  • Not many features compared to the competition.

Homebrew is an open-source package manager for macOS that offers an easy way to install software and tools through the command line. If you are a coder, developer, Terminal lover, or more tech-savvy than an average Mac user, you can use Homebrew to simplify software installation on your Mac.

Homebrew lets you use commands to download and install Python, Ruby, MongoDB, PHP, Git, Node.js, cask, colordiff, Nmap, and other Unix command-line utilities. In this guide, I’ll show you how to install Homebrew on macOS.

What is Homebrew?

Homebrew is an open-source package manager for Mac. You can use Homebrew to quickly find, install, and manage numerous command-line utilities and apps on your Mac. From its developers, “Homebrew is a software that installs the stuff you need, but Apple didn’t.”

Homebrew offers a vast collection of software packages that are easy to install, update, and uninstall using simple Terminal commands. This makes it ideal for those who need to frequently install software without jumping through hoops.

With Homebrew’s command-line interface, you can quickly install several developer tools like Python or open-source apps like Chromium-based web browsers that you use daily. It’s designed to be flexible, allowing you to completely customize the installation process to suit your specific needs.

Benefits of using Homebrew

  • You can save a lot of time by using Homebrew. It automates downloading, compiling, and installing apps. It eliminates the requirement to hunt down software installers and manually run installation procedures.
  • Homebrew is easy to install and set up. You’re only required to execute a few simple commands in Terminal.
  • Homebrew is an open-source tool that offers a centralized repository of software packages, making it easy to find the software you need.
  • With Homebrew, you can easily choose which version of a particular software package you want to install and customize the installation.
  • The program is designed to be secure and doesn’t require root access to install software. This helps to eliminate security vulnerabilities.

Requirements to use Homebrew on Mac

Before you learn how to install Homebrew on Mac, let’s make sure your Mac matches the basic prerequisites for running the tool:

  • CPU/Chipset: M1/M2/M3 series Apple Silicon or 64-bit Intel
  • Operating System: macOS Big Sur 11 or later
  • Command Line Tools (CLT): Xcode, Terminal
  • Shell: Any Bourne-compatible shell like Bash, zsh, fish, etc.

How to install Homebrew on macOS

Homebrew relies on several dependencies to work, so you’ll have to download each of them. After that, the next step is fetching Homebrew from its GitHub repository.

Here’s the detailed five-stage process for installing Homebrew on Mac.

1. Install Xcode from App Store

Xcode is a native Integrated Development Environment (IDE) in macOS that provides a set of tools for developers to use in creating software and building complex development systems, like compilers and debuggers.

Because Homebrew relies on Xcode, the first step is to download it from the App Store.

Note: It’s not mandatory to download Xcode to install Homebrew on a Mac. However, I still recommend doing so to ensure a smoother user experience.

  1. Launch the App Store → Search for Xcode → Click Get.

    download xcode
  2. Once the download finishes, open Xcode → Click Install.
  3. Then, click Continue to complete the installation.

You might be asked to pick the platform you’d like to develop for—choose macOS.

2. Install command line tools for Xcode

Once you install Xcode on your Mac, you also need to install command line tools for Xcode. These tools allow your Mac to accommodate some of the Homebrew package components.

  1. Open Terminal on your Mac using Launchpad or Spotlight search.
You can also open Terminal from Finder → Applications → Utilities.
  2. Type xcode-select --install in the Terminal  Hit return.

    install xcode command line tools
  3. When a prompt appears, click Install.

    click on install
  4. Go through the License Agreement, then click Agree.

    click on agree
  5. If the Mac is not connected to power, you’ll be prompted to do so. You may click Continue on Battery Power If your Mac’s battery is at 50% or above.

    click continue on battery power
  6. Once the Xcode command line tools are downloaded and installed, click Done.

    click done

3. Get Homebrew from its GitHub repository

Once you have Xcode and command line tools for Xcode ready, you can use the Terminal on your Mac to fetch Homebrew from its official GitHub repository.

While there are various Homebrew forks available out there, I’d highly recommend installing the original one to ensure maximum compatibility.

  1. Open Terminal on your Mac.
  2. Paste the below command into the Terminal window → Press return.
    /bin/bash -c "$(curl -fsSL https://raw.githubusercontent.com/Homebrew/install/HEAD/install.sh)"
  3. Now, enter your Mac’s password → Then, hit return to continue.
Note: You can’t see the password as it’s typed, but it gets recorded in the background.

    install homebrew
  4. Hit the return key again to continue.
  5. After running a few commands, your screen will display an Installation successful message.

    homebrew installation completion

4. Add Homebrew path

It’s necessary to add Homebrew to your Mac’s system path once you finish installing it. Adding Homebrew to the system path makes finding, installing, using, and managing software packages easier.

If you wish to skip this step, you can still use Homebrew without it. However, you’ll need to specify Homebrew’s installation directory every time you access it via the Terminal. We recommend avoiding this hassle, since adding a system path makes things quite a bit easier.

  1. Open Terminal on your Mac.
  2. Paste the given commands one by one and hit return after each one.
    • cd /opt/homebrew/bin/
    • ls
    • PATH=$PATH:/opt/homebrew/bin
    • cd
    • touch .zshrc
    • echo export PATH=$PATH:/opt/homebrew/bin -> .zshrc
    • brew doctor

      set homebrew path
  3. After entering these commands, you’ll see a message that says “Your system is ready to brew.”

That’s it! You can verify if Homebrew has been installed correctly and get moving!

5. Verify if Homebrew is installed correctly

After you finish installing Homebrew on your Mac, it’s recommended that you verify if Homebrew is installed correctly. Here’s how you can do this:

  1. Open Terminal on your Mac.
  2. Type brew -v into the Terminal window → Press Return.
If Homebrew is installed correctly, you’ll see a version number for it.

    check brew version
  3. In case the last command didn’t work, type brew doctor → Hit Return.
This command will scan the Homebrew installation for potential errors.

    fix homebrew errors

If you see brew -v and the Homebrew version, it means Homebrew has been installed properly. If you see the second error message, just follow the instructions and repeat the process.

How to install packages with Homebrew

This is where all the hard work comes to fruition. Once Homebrew is successfully installed on your Mac, you can follow the steps provided below to quickly find and install the apps of your choice.

  1. Open Terminal on your Mac.
  2. Type brew search (SearchTerm) into the Terminal window.
Replace (SearchTerm) with the package you’re looking for. Here, I have gone with Firefox.

    homebrew search package
  3. Type brew info (PackageName) to retrieve details about a package.
Replace (PackageName) with the name of the package.

    find homebrew package informantion
  4. Type brew install (PackageName) into the Terminal window.
Replace (PackageName) with the name of the package. In my case, I’m installing the Firefox browser, so I’ve typed firefox.

    installing packages with homebrew

After you install a software using Homebrew, it will automatically show up in the Launchpad. But If you want to access the downloaded packages (known as casks), you can find them under /opt/homebrew/caskroom in Finder.

How to uninstall packages with Homebrew

If you want to uninstall or delete specific packages or apps on your Mac, you can effortlessly do so by executing the following Homebrew command.

  1. Open Terminal on your Mac.
  2. Type brew list into the Terminal windows → Then press return.
This command will list down all the apps you installed via Homebrew.

    homebrew list apps
  3. Type brew uninstall (PackageName) into the Terminal window.
Replace (PackageName) with the name of the package. In our case, we’re removing the Firefox browser, so we’ve typed Firefox.

    uninstalling packages with homebrew

How to turn off Homebrew analytics

Homebrew, while open-source, collects and shares analytical data with the developers to help them improve the tool. As a result, if you don’t want to contribute and share your data, you may turn off Homebrew analytics.

Remember that this step is optional, but I recommend you follow the steps given below and turn off analytics to keep your data safe and secure.

  1. Open Terminal on your Mac.
  2. Type brew analytics off into the Terminal window Press Return.

    disable homebrew analytics

How to update apps with Homebrew

Besides installing and uninstalling software packages, Homebrew also offers a convenient way to keep your apps updated. Here’s how you can do this:

  1. Open Terminal on your Mac.
  2. Type brew outdated into the Terminal window → Then, press return.
This command will list down all the apps that need to be updated.
  3. Type brew upgrade (PackageName) into the Terminal → Press return.
Replace (PackageName) with the name of the package.

    update apps with homebrew

The steps above can help you update individual apps. However, if you want to update all apps at once, you may type brew upgrade → Then hit return.

How to update Homebrew on Mac

Like any other app on your Mac, Homebrew also receives periodic updates with new features and refinements. Here’s how you can update Homebrew:

  1. Open Terminal on your Mac.
  2. Type brew update into the Terminal window Press Return.

    update homebrew

How to uninstall Homebrew on Mac

If you didn’t find Homebrew useful and want to remove it from your Mac, you may do so easily by following the quick instructions outlined below.

  1. Open Terminal on your Mac.
  2. Paste the given command into the terminal window → Press Return.
    /bin/bash -c "$(curl fsSL https://raw.githubusercontent.com/Homebrew/install/HEAD/uninstall.sh)"

    uninstalling homebrew
  3. Type in the Terminal window → Then, press Return.

type y and press return to uninstall homebrew
  4. Then, enter your Mac’s password.

After that, Homebrew will be uninstalled from your Mac.

Is it necessary to install Homebrew on my Mac?

It’s not essential to install Homebrew on your Mac. However, Homebrew can be a valuable tool if you want to quickly download applications and developer tools on your device without fiddling around in a web browser.

Can I use Homebrew to install apps with a GUI?

While writing how-to guides for you guys, I can’t even count how often I hit the Delete key. So, I can understand your plight if the Delete key is not working on your Mac. However, fixing your Delete key is easier than you think.

Here, I will show you different methods to troubleshoot the issue. But, before I start, let’s understand why you are facing the problem in the first place.

Why is Delete key not working on my Mac?

The Delete button may stop working on your Mac due to various reasons, such as:

  • Software glitches
  • Physical damage
  • Misconfigured keyboard settings
  • Dirt and debris on the Keyboard
  • Wired or Bluetooth Keyboard issues

How to fix delete button not working on Mac

Now that you have a better insight, let’s learn how to deal with this jarring issue effectively.

  1. Clean your Mac keyboard
  2. Restart your Mac
  3. Enable Keyboard Viewer
  4. Check connection for wired keyboard
  5. Un-pair and pair the Bluetooth keyboard again
  6. Use the correct key combination
  7. Verify delete permissions
  8. Check the Keyboard settings
  9. Turn off Slow Keys
  10. Delete Keyboard PLIST file
  11. Reset PRAM or NVRAM on your Macbook
  12. Update macOS
  13. Reset your Mac

1. Clean your Mac keyboard

Depending on your working conditions, dust and debris can accumulate over and underneath the keyboard’s keys. So, it can cause a hindrance when you press the Delete key.

So, before trying any drastic fixes, thoroughly clean your Mac’s keyboard with a microfiber cloth or soft-bristled cleaning brush. Ensure no dust is left under the keys.

Now, check whether the Delete key is working fine. If not, move on to other solutions.

2. Restart your Mac

A simple restart can fix any underlying minor software glitches or bugs, causing the Delete key to malfunction.

  1. Click the Apple logo at the top left of the desktop.
  2. Select Restart from the drop-down menu.

Select the Apple Logo and tap Restart on Mac

3. Enable Keyboard Viewer

Now that cleaning and restarting Mac is out of the way, it’s time to handle this problem professionally. When the delete key on your Mac starts to give you a hard time, Keyboard Viewer can serve as an effective solution. This feature allows you to see a virtual representation of your keyboard on the screen, highlighting pressed keys as you type.

Follow the steps discussed below to enable Keyboard Viewer for your Mac:

  1. Click the Apple logo ()System Settings.

Click Apple Logo and System Settings in macOS Ventura
  2. Choose the Keyboard option from the menu.
  3. Hit Edit next to the Input Sources tab.

    Go to Keyboard, Edit
  4. Finally, toggle on the Show Input menu in menu bar.
  5. Select Done to exit the interface.

Toggle on the Show Input menu in menu bar
  6. Now, click the Keyboard icon from the menu bar.
  7. Choose Show Keyboard Viewer.

    Select Show Keyboard Viewer
  8. Doing so, a virtual keyboard will appear on your screen.

If your Mac’s Delete key is working fine, it will be highlighted in the virtual keyboard. If not, check the same using any external Keyboard. Even if that fails, get your Mac checked at Apple Genius Bar.

4. Check connection for wired keyboard

If you are using a wired keyboard with your Mac, the problem may lie in the wired connection instead of the Delete key. In that case, check the wire for any wear and tear. If not, do this:

  1. Unplug the Keyboard from your Mac.
  2. Clean the USB port to remove any dust or debris.
  3. Connect the keyboard to your Mac, and check whether the Delete key works.
  4. If not, try plugging the keyboard into another USB port, as the issue can also be with your Mac’s USB port.

5. Un-pair and pair the Bluetooth keyboard again

A connectivity issue between your Mac and the Bluetooth keyboard can be the main culprit behind the Delete key not working. Try disconnecting the Bluetooth keyboard and pairing it again to see if this solves the problem.

  1. Open the Bluetooth settings on your Mac.
  2. Click Disconnect next to the paired keyboard.

    Disconnect the Keyboard
  3. Now, click the “i” (info) button next to the Connect button.

Click the info icon next to the paired keyboard
  4. Choose Forget This DeviceForget Device when prompted.

Click Forget This Device in Keyboard
  5. Wait for a few seconds and put your keyboard in the pairing mode.
  6. Locate the Keyboard under Nearby Devices list → Click Connect next to it.

    Connect the Keyboard

Once the process is complete, try using the Delete key again.

6. Use the correct key combination

If the Delete key can remove a typed word but can’t delete a file or item, you might be using the wrong key combination.

If you simply hit the Delete key after selecting an item, it won’t do anything. This is because deleting an item requires pressing the “Command + Delete” or “Shift + Command + Delete” key combination.

7. Verify delete permissions

If, even after using the correct key combination, you can’t delete the selected file or folder, you might not have the necessary permissions to do so. Here’s how to verify:

  1. Right-click on the file or folder you want to delete.
  2. Click on the Get Info.
  3. Check whether you have the Read and Write permissions.

8. Check the Keyboard settings

Sometimes, the problem might not be particularly with the Delete key but with the Keyboard settings itself. To check this:

  1. Open the Keyboard settings on your Mac.
  2. Here, ensure the Key repeat rate and Delay until repeat is set to your preference.

Select Keyboard in Settings, adjust Key repeat rate and Delay until repeat on Mac

9. Turn off Slow Keys

Like the above Keyboard settings, there is a chance that you might have activated the Slow Keys accessibility. This feature delays the time between pressing the physical key and your Mac registering the input.

  1. Navigate to Apple logo ()System Settings.

Click Apple Logo and System Settings in macOS Ventura
  2. Head over to the Accessibility menu.
  3. Choose the Keyboard option.

    Accessibility, Keyboard
  4. Disable Slow Keys if enabled.

    Disable Slow Keys

Keep in mind that this solution may be applicable if you are using an older MacBook model or have enabled this particular accessibility feature intentionally.

10. Delete Keyboard PLIST file

If the issue persists, deleting the Keyboard Property List (PLIST) file may help. These files store your Mac’s keyboard settings, including keyboard preferences.

  1. Open Finder → Click Go in the menu bar.
  2. Select the Go to folder option.

    Click Go, Go To folder
  3. Type in ~/Library/Preferences and hit return.

    Go to ~:Library:Preferences
  4. Now locate the following files:
    • apple.Keyboard-Settings.extension.plist
    • com.apple.keyboardservicesd.plist
  5. Select both and Move to Bin.

    Delete keyboard plist files
  6. Close Finder and restart your Mac.

11. Reset PRAM or NVRAM on your Macbook

Resetting your Mac’s PRAM (Parameter Random Access Memory) can often fix the hardware issue your Mac is experiencing. To do this:

  1. Shut down your Mac.
  2. Now, turn it back on and immediately press & hold the “Command + P + R” keys until you hear the startup sound for the next time.

12. Update macOS

Apple regularly pushes new macOS updates to resolve various issues. So, check if an update is available. If yes, update macOS on your Mac.

Simply, go to System SettingsGeneralSoftware Update → Click Upgrade now.

go to general, software update in mac settings

13. Reset your Mac

If nothing works, factory resetting your Mac is your last resort. It can help resolve various hardware and software issues your Mac might be experiencing and will return it in out-of-the-box condition.

Bonus: Delete text without using Delete key on your Mac

If the factory reset method doesn’t work, you can use several key combinations to delete the typed text.

Here’s a set of commands you can use for your convenience.

  • To delete the character before the cursor, press Ctrl+H.
  • To delete the character before the cursor, press Ctrl+D.
  • To delete text, highlight it and right-click the same → Select Cut.
  • To delete from the cursor to the end of the line or paragraph, Press Ctrl+K.

These should come in handy until you find a permanent resolve.

Restore and recover!

I hope you have successfully fixed the Delete key not working on Mac issue with the troubleshooting steps I have listed and can delete text, files, and more. However, if the issue persists after trying everything, contact Apple Support.

So you’ve lost your patience with all the buzzing messages and sniffers on Instagram? You deserve some time off, which can be done without necessarily ghosting anyone. All you need to do is turn off your Instagram active status from your iPhone. Once done, your followers won’t know whether you’re online.

The process is simple. Read along to find out!

How to hide Instagram active status on iPhone

  1. Launch the Instagram app.
  2. Head to the Profile section → Tap the hamburger icon (three lines).
  3. Tap Messages and story replies below How others can interact with you.
  4. Choose Show activity status → Toggle off Show Activity Status.

Scroll and tap Messages and story replies, choose Show activity status, and toggle off Show Activity Status

How to turn off Instagram active status on Mac

  1. Launch a web browser.
  2. Head to instagram.com.
  3. Click the More icon (three lines)Settings.

Click the More icon and select Settings
  4. Select How others can interact with you.
  5. Toggle off the button next to Show Activity Status.

Choose How others can interact with you and toggle off the button next to Show Activity Status

Voila! In this way, you can easily hide your active status on Instagram.

What happens after turning off Instagram’s active status?

Once you hide your active status on Instagram, the default green dot on your profile disappears. So people can’t tell anymore whether you’re online. However, they can still tell you’re online by checking the last time you post a reel or a story on Instagram.

Will I still be able to view the activity status of others if I hide my Show Activity Status?

No, hiding your Show Activity Status will prevent you from seeing the activity status of other users.

What happens if I turn on Show Active Status again?

Reactivating your Show Active Status will enable others to see your most recent activity on Instagram, just as they could before you disabled it. This includes those who had visibility into your activity status prior to its deactivation.

Can I selectively hide my Show Active Status from specific individuals?

No, the option to hide your Show Active Status is all-encompassing. If you disable it, your activity status will be hidden from everyone, including friends, family, and followers.

Get invisible!

Hiding your Instagram active status makes your followers believe you’re not online even when you are. However, while you’ve learned the trick, I wouldn’t say it’s ideal if you run your client base on Instagram. I bet you want them to know you’re online. Else, you might end up veiling your business as well.

Regardless, with your active status hidden, you can catch all the fun you want on Instagram while your followers keep wondering whether you’re online or not. Why did you hide your Instagram active status? Let me know in the comments section below.

With every new update, Apple adds more features to the Safari browser on Mac. Unfortunately, sometimes, these updates may bring unexpected guests, like bugs, that can affect the browser. So, let’s look at solutions to fix Safari not working on Mac after the update.

Why is Safari not working on my Mac?

Before getting into the fixes, here’s a look at the major culprits behind the Safari not working on Mac issue.

  • Software glitches that came with macOS update.
  • The website you are trying to access is down for maintenance or other issues.
  • Your Mac might not have a stable internet connection.
  • Heavy accumulation of cookies or cache.
  • Viruses from plugins or extensions.

How to fix Safari not working on Mac

Here are some effective troubleshooting steps to fix Safari if it’s not working on your Mac.

1. Reload the webpage

Since Safari is not loading webpages on Mac after the update, you can start fixing it by reloading the webpage you are currently on. To reload: Press Cmd (⌘) + R.

Also, to ensure the problem is not with one particular website, try accessing another web page on Safari.

Alternatively, click View from the menu bar and select Reload Page. If neither is working, ensure you have a stable internet connection and look at other fixes.

2. Force Quit Safari

If Safari is frozen or not loading, try to force quit the app and see if that helps.

Once done, reopen the app, and it will automatically continue from where you left off.

3. Check and Reset Network Settings

If some bugs have fiddled with the default settings, even that may stop Safari from working.

To solve that, you can reset the network settings on your Mac and see if you are still facing the issue.

4. Turn off VPN

If you are using a VPN on your Mac, it might stop you from accessing geo-restricted websites. So, it would be wise to turn off the VPN and re-check if you can access the desired website in Safari.

Go to Apple menuSystem Settings → Pick VPN in the sidebar → Toggle off VPN.

If you are using a third-party VPN app for your Mac, you might need to open the app and disconnect the service.

Then, retry using Safari. If this doesn’t fix the issue, proceed towards other fixes.

5. Try using a Private window

As mentioned before, the problem might be with certain websites. Interestingly, you can access some of the websites flawlessly when opened in a private window.

To open a private window in Safari, use Cmd (⌘) + Shift + N.

6. Give your Mac a quick restart

With a quick Mac restart, you might be able to solve the Safari not working issue.

Click Apple menuRestart → Click Restart again to confirm.

7. Delete Safari History, Cache, and Cookies

Have you ever wished to erase some memories in life to start afresh?

While it’s not entirely possible in life, you can clear cache, history, and cookies on Safari on Mac. This will help load your web pages quickly.

That’s not all. You can further clear other unwanted files from Safari using Finder. Here’s how:

  1. Open Finder → click the Go option from the menu bar.
  2. Choose Go to Folder.

Click on Go and Go to Folder in Finder
  3. Now enter/paste the following: ~/Library/Safari.

    Enter Library Safari code
  4. Now, delete the files History.db and LastSession.plist.

Delete Safari History, Cache, and Cookies on Mac

You can use this to clean up the corrupted Safari PLIST files and database. Don’t worry; Safari will eventually regenerate these files. Clearing these files will also remove what’s making Safari not work on Mac after the update.

8. Disable Safari Extensions

While you downloaded them to improve your browsing experience, some corrupted extensions might be the reason Safari does not work on your Mac after the macOS Sonoma update.

  1. Launch Safari → click Safari in the menu bar → go to Settings.
  2. Click Extensions → disable extensions by unchecking them.
  3. To uninstall these extensions, press delete.

9. Enable JavaScript

This is a solution that often goes under the radar. Certain websites need JavaScript to load properly.

To enable it, go to Safari SettingsSecurity → Check Enable JavaScript.

10. Disable iCloud Private Relay

Enabling iCloud Private Relay can mask your IP address and make it hard for you to access certain websites.

If you trust the website, try disabling Private Relay and accessing it again.

To do so, go to Apple menu → Click System Settings → Pick your Apple ID → Select iCloud → Click Private Relay → Toggle off Private Relay.

11. Delete Preference files

As one can guess, Safari’s preference files contain information regarding all the settings and changes you have made in the browser. It might be why Safari is not working on Mac after the update. To solve that, you can simply clear it:

  1. Quit Safari if it’s running.
  2. Launch Finder.
  3. Hold the Option key and hit the Go menu.
  4. Choose Library.
You can also use Shift + Command + L

Click Go and Choose Library in Finder
  5. Navigate to Containers → Safari → Data → Library → Safari.
Even if you see multiple Safari files, only one will have the proper path.

Go to multiple Safari files on Mac
  6. Delete all the files that end with the following extensions:
    • db
    • db-shm
    • db-wal

      Delete Preference files on Mac

12. Flush your DNS cache on Mac

Sometimes, adding multiple Domain Name Systems (DNS) can cause issues with Safari.

So, clear the DNS cache and see if the issue is solved.

13. Login using Safe mode

Have you ever heard of playing it safe? While it is close to impossible in life, it’s possible in macOS with Safe Mode. With this, you can prevent Safari from freezing.

14. Update macOS

Suppose the underlying issue is indeed a result of the glitches that came with a macOS update you downloaded. Apple will surely release another update to fix such bugs.

So, update macOS as soon as the next version is available.

Happy browsing with Safari

With this tutorial, I hope these solutions could help you save Safari from not working on MacBook Air or other Macs after the update.

If none of the solutions are helpful, the last resort is to contact Apple Support and see if they can help you look at the issue.

If you still have any doubts or suggestions, do let me know in the comments.
